It is a carburetor issue. inside the carburetor the fuel gums up especially in seasonal equipment as snowblowers. look inside the bowl and see if there is any water. take it off and clean it real good with carburetor cleaner. it will run like new.

pull the carby and clean out the jets and passages
the carby cannot produce a constant air/f;ow mixture unless the choke is on and the governor is having difficulty keeping the engine speed constant

I have a Craftsman Snow Thrower model # 247.881731. At the end of last year I drained the gas as recommended in the manual, this year I filled it with fresh gas and it now has a problem starting. I pu

Draining the gas from the tank doesn't drain the float bowl in the carburetor. It still had last year's gas in it. Gas will start to turn to varnish if left sitting 6 to 12 months. You'll probably have to remove the carburetor, disassemble it and clean it out with Gumout carb cleaner or some similar product.
When you get it running and the snow's over and done with, put some Stabil in the gas tank to prevent the gas from converting to varnish and then start it up and run it until that stabilized gas is through the carburetor and into the engine. You can leave it with the treated gas in the tank.

What will cause newish sears 27cc string trimmer only run on full choke?

If the trimmer has been sitting for a long time it is probably the carb needs to be rebuilt. Before doing that check the plug and be sure you are getting fire. Be sure nothing is blocking the fuel filter in the tank. Be sure exhaust or muffler is not plugged, with only 5 hours on the trimmer I wouldn't think that is the problem. Sound more like something in the carb. You can look on you tube to see how to rebuild the carb if you have not done it in the pass it is fairly simple to do.

I have a 17 year old snowblower. Sears Craftsman 3 HP single stage. It wouldn't start. I changed the spark plug and now it started but it's running very rough with excess smoke. If I press the gas...

Good to hear you got it running anyway.

Look for a choke, maybe it's just running with the choke set. Could also be that it's all gummed up from sitting, if that is the case then some running should bring it out of it by the time you've put a couple of tanks of fuel through it.

Is this a two-stroke motor? If so, be sure you have your fuel mixed correctly- go by the manufacturer's statement concerning how much oil to how much fuel, never assume that the oil bottle directions apply to your machine because they probably don't.

Good luck with it,

lp

Runs on choke a little

sounds like the carburetor has gummed up a bit, and may need adjustments - or, the fuel pickup in the tank has come loose [i.e.: deteriorated fuel lines] - also, make sure your gas mix is FRESH. if your gas mix is more than 2 months old, dump it

10 year old Craftsman Lawn Tractor won't start

That's really strange. The low-speed fuel adjustment screw may be set way too rich, but that doesn't seem likely. With the air filter off, look at the choke plate if possible as you advance the throttle and see at what point the choke closes. Back it off till the choke opens and then put the filter back on and try to start it at that setting. Another thing that could cause too much fuel is if the adjustment of the carburetor float is off, causing the fuel level to be too high in the carb bowl.

You need to play with the timing adjustment, either on the spark plug, or the gap between the contact and the magneto.
That'll do it ;)

Craftsman Riding mower won't stay running

Well this could be a couple of things first thing first is check the air filter and make sure its clean you can blow it with air or pore gas over it and clean it make sure you let it dry before reinserting
second im assuming this is the first time you have used it this year if so the gas you have in it hasnt been sitting in it all year has it like anything else gas gets old
third alot of times you can let it run for a while with the choke out then slowly pushing it in
fourth you could have water in the gas remove the tank and empty it remove the spark plug turn the engine 4 or 5 times only bumping it dont hold it down this will blow some of the water out then dry the spark plug off and replace it
if this doesnt help it could possibly be carburetor problems
