Consult your owner's manual. Computerized machines should be oiled only as instructed or you risk damaging it.

Where to oil your sewing machine

The rule of thumb about oiling your sewing machine is to put one drop of oil (sewing machine oil only, please!) wherever one metal part moves against another. Do that, and you won't go wrong. You can also look for the oil ports -- small holes in metal gears and housings--I've posted a good photo at you put one drop of sewing machine oil. Don't use oil on the gears themselves--use sewing machine grease instead.

Oil ports and places where metal moves against metal can be found in three locations: on the top of the machine, under the cover; on the bottom of the machine; and behind the access door (or panel) on the left side of the machine head.

Here's a generic sketch:

Note: Please refer to your sewing machine manual to see if your machine is self-oiling. If it is, disregard this note--you do not oil those machines.

Where should I oil my unidentified sewing machine?

Sharon, some machines don't require oiling.
You should read the machine's manual to double check.
Or you could check the machine's manufacture on-line.
Oiling a non-oiled machine can cause all kinds of problems.

I want to oil my machine but only have a photocopy of the owners manual which appears to show 4 spots to oil the machine. My machine has 5 places on the top to add oil. Can you advise?

so add oil to only those spots that the owners manual tells you to oil,you owners manual is all about your machine, follow it,just because there are extra holes doesnt mean they go to something

Oil my machine

This really depends on the model of machine you have. Most new machines are self oiling, but some still require a drop of oil in the bobbin case. Your sewing machine manual should include a oiling diagram if your machine requires that the user oil their machine. You should be able to download a manual for your machine from the Janome website, even the retired models are there.

How often should it be oiled?

sewing machine oil is a very light oil so it does not hang around very long. if you are a heavy user of the machine it is best to oil it every month or so. if when it is stored for a long period it should be oil then too. there are one or 2 bits that need some light greasing too. some 3-1 oil is good for the job and do all the moving parts lightly and not too much oil as it will mark your clothes. hope this helps.

Trying to figure out where to oil my old White 265 machine. the manual only talks about how to oil the bobbin shuttle.

Hi. The rule of thumb is to put one drop (just one drop, that's all it takes) of sewing machine oil wherever two pieces of metal move against each other. You can also look for the oil ports(see tip on where to look for oil ports and for a photo, see Your machine may also have small oil holes in the sewing machine housing, so put one drop of sewing machine oil in each of those.

Please use only sewing machine oil to oil your machine.

Hope this helps!

How to oil

some machines have sealed bearings and need oil only on a few external moving parts .. most older machines need just about everything that moves oiled periodically .. we need a model number to tell which you have ... use only oil intended for sewing machines .. other types of oil might become gummy after a while and make a mess of the machine .. if you can open the machine to see inside .(usually the top comes off) .. then anything that moves not made of plastic gets a drop of oil .. there are usually several places under the machine that also get oiled .. in general if it moves oil it ... dont get oil inside the motor where the brushes are ... if your machine has sealed bearings then you dont have to and shouldnt oil them..
