Why doesn't upper spray arm function properly?

A couple of scenarios could cause this problem but the simplest might be the way the dishwasher is loaded. The upper spray arm rotates when water is pumped through the vertical supply tube and into the arm. Make sure that you are not loading the lower rack with items that interfere with the rotation of the upper arm rotor. It might also be a good idea to verify that the feed tube that goes to the spray arm is securely connected to the vertical supply tube.

I have a 91 integra and the rotor button keeps breaking off in the distributor. I have put 2 new distributors on and the same thing keeps happening.

Hi There.
Check and see if you have the correct rotor arm, check the hieght against the old one if you still have it, if that doesnt do any thing check and make sure that the rotor arm is seated properly on the rotor shaft..

The top shelf is not getting clean. There is food residue on the glassware that was not there at the start of the wash.

Hi,

The most likely answer is that your upper rotor spray arm isn't spinning or spraying water. They aren't powered by a motor - they are driven by water pressure. The most common reason for them not spinning is a blockage somewhere. The lower rotor arm is spraying dirt from the plates in the lower rack onto the glassware and there is no spray from the upper rotor arm to rinse it off.

Check the small spray holes on the top of the upper rotor arm. If they are blocked, use a large pin or a cocktail stick to clean them out. If they aren't blocked, check to see whether the upper rotor arm is spinning by following these steps:

1. Note the exact position of the upper spray arm or spin it so that it is running precisely left to right or front to back
2. Close the door
3. Start any wash cycle
4 After it has finished filling with water and starting cycling the water, open the door and note the position of the upper spray arm again.

If the spray arm is in the exact same position as when you closed the door it's almost definite that it's not spinning. In this event, cancel the wash and do the above test one more time just to eliminate the element of pure chance.

Try the above tests and checks and then post back with the results if you need any further assistance. If posting back, please include the full model number of your Frigidaire dishwasher

Regards,
BElectric.

My 1990 sierra has a miss in it when i accelarate. I replaced plugs and wires but not the fuel filter or fuel pump.I also smell fuel outside between the bed and cab on the drivers side

Check out the distributor cap and rotor arm, - and make sure the plugs ar gapped properly - should be 1mm on 1.6 1.8, and 0.75mm on the 2 liter.
Check the oil level urgently, if it has been misfiring for some time you will have acuumulated all that unburnt petrol in the oil sump!!! (you can test this by getting a bit of oil from the dipstick and putting a drop on your fingers, rub together and sniff the oil, if it stinks of petrol change it -you need to change the oil filter too since it wil be full of petrol tainted oil also.
Once you are sure you have good oil and either it was ok after testing it from the distick "golden, clean oil" or you replaced the contaminated oil and filter you can move on to sorting out this misfire.
- You didn't mention if you checked or replaced the HT coil - Check for strong sparking from the main HT lead from the coil itslelf, Pull the lead from the centre of the distibutor cap - have someone crank the engine while there is a "spare" sparkplug in the main ht lead (ground the plug to the engine, holding the rubber insulation of the cable with pliers - Use a normal HT lead if the main coil lead wont reach a suitable grounding point with the sparkplug) - check for solid bright blue spark, it should be regular timed, and strong EVERY time - any missing or weak sparks indicate electrical problem either - the coil is failing - or the battery is weak - or the distributor is faulty. - a faulty distributor would be expensive to replace and more so to repair, a reconditioned distributor costs around £120.
for now I assume the coil checked out fine and gave a strong steady uniform set of sparks. ----------------------- With a fully functioning coil, you're left with the distributor cap and rotor arm - the distributor cap comes off with 2 screws at the left and right sides of the cap between the HT Connectors - unscrew them - (note the original orientation of the distributor cap before you pull it off to aid refitting) you can now pull away the cap from the rest of the distributor.
INSIDE the CAP there are four "poles" round the outside, and a spring mounted contact in the center - make sure the poles are clean and shiny with only light markings at most, if they are blackened, whitened ro rounded and pitted then replace the cap - ford dealers or local part shop, most shops will stock both the rotor arm and distributor cap for around £15-30 - phone around for the best deal.
Still on the distributor is the rotor arm, this pulls off - it has to be pulled dead straight off the distributor shaft - once you have the rotor arm off you can inspect the metal contact on the top for general dirtiness and decay, it "should" be shiny brass/copper in colour. if it looks pretty bad, pitted or blackened/burned- - get a new rotor arm from ford dealers or from local part shop (not expensive)
Once you are sure of a clean or new rotor arm and distributor cap you can try the engine again - hopefully the misfire is gone.
If it is still there....
we are here

DISTRIBUTOR CAP - FINE ROTOR ARM - FINE OIL + FILTER NOT OVER LEVEL + CLEAN, NO PETROL IN IT HT COIL - GOOD STRONG REGULAR SPARK. -----

If it still misfires with all these things in perfect order then you are left with: Clogged Fuel Line/Filter or Failing Fuel Pump or Ignition TIMING - ( 10-12 degrees BTDC) have igition timing checked and set if not correct. OR... Faulty Distributor - pretty much worst case scenario. Tell me how you get on - Often it is the distributor cap and rotor arm - If not I hope its the fuel filter!
Good luck,

My top rack is not getting clean, it appears spray arm is not dispersing water, can it get clogged?

Yes it can get plugged. Any debris pumped up to the arm can get lodged into the tiny holes. Also, sometimes the arm itself becomes split along the joint between the lower and upper half. Remove the arm to inspect, clean, and repair/replace the arm if split. I fixed our Maytag spray arm when it split, by drilling a series of small holes along the split parts and sewing the thing back together with fairly fine copper wire. Still working great after a number of years. The small spray holes can be poked clean with a heavy needle and the arm vacuumed out. If after all this it still won't spray properly, the intake screen at the bottom of the lower spray arm tower may need to be cleaned as well. Remove components starting with the spray arm and work your way down, noting placement and orientation of each piece. Remove the screen, and soak it in hot water, detergent and white vinegar for an hour or so. Check all holes in the deck for any food plugging. Reassemble in reverse order and check the lower spray arm for plugging as well. Hope some of this helps!

Poor washing

Tear down the lower spray arm mechanism to the deck, noting placement and orientation of each part as removed. Look for cracked/split plastic while you do this. At the bottom, you should find a large screen that is likely plugged with food and water deposits. Soak it in a solution of hot water, detergent, and white vinegar for about an hour. Scrub it if necessary to get the screen clean and open. Clean any openings in the deck of food deposits. Reassemble everything in reverse order. Inspect and clean all of the spray arms (the small holes), and look for any split seams in the arms. Hope this helps!
