Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

The exterior of my Panasonic NN-S696 Genius Premier Microwave Oven (vintage 1997) has only just started getting very hot over the control panel and down the outside each time I use it. The cooking mechanism also seems less efficient. What's happening? Can I do something to correct this?

Very helpful solution. Many thanks. Had a feeling the unit was on its last legs. Wouldn't admit it to myself. It had been a wonderful unit up until a few days ago. We all got to go sometime. I'm 67. I hope I'm not next. Okay, then, thanks again. May God bless you. - Darryl Randall, Leamington, Ontario, Canada oldarryl@hotmail.com

You have definitely reached the end of the life cycle for that model of Panasonic's microwave line. Any time you feel heat from the oven from the outside it is an indication that the electronics are failing. With an oven that old your local repair center probably can't get the parts anymore. Even if they could, the amount of money they would charge you for repair would probably be more than a new microwave.

Check the 20 amp fuse where the power cord ends inside the oven. If it is open check the latch switches. If the switches check ok the invertor is probably bad, smoking.

Pushing the start button trips the breaker. All functions seems to work, fan, clock etc but it just started as soon as you push start it trips the breaker. Control panel/board seems fine no burn marks.

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.
Service manual below, troubleshoot with that. http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/5734/PANASONIC_NN-K652.html

I need a manual for my Genius by Panasonic...

Assuming the NN-T888S is the correct model, you can download it from this URL:

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PNAEndecaEnterpriseSearchCmd?N=779832187&Ne=&No=0&Ntt=NN-T888S&Ntk=EnterpriseSearch&URL=vEnterpriseSearch&storeId=15001&cmTag=true

If that doesn't work, go to www.panasonic.com, click on 'support', search for your model number, and see if it will provide you with a link to download the manual.
