I have a Maytag dishwasher Model # MDB7749AWM2that stopped working during one of its cleaning cycles. It smelled a bit like something was burning. Nothing was at the bottom.

Since water doesn't drain out ,it could be a clogged in the drain line. Often the problem is at the point where the drain line attaches to the garbage disposer or household drain line. You should remove this line and clear it form any debris in the hose or the hose connection. Be sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again. Good luck!

I had this same problem. I think its the upper spray arm vibrating during wash cycle. To verify; prevent the upper arm from rotating by putting a long spatula through the top rack or zip tie the arm so it don't rotate. If the noise goes away you found your problem.
