Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Hi, could anybody tell me if it's normal to smell the gas when the heater is on?

I have a second hand Helius Superser gas heater and every time it's on you can smell the gas, I was wondering if that is normal or it's leaking and needs to be serviced, maybe do it my self if it's an easy fix.

I smell gas at turn on control valve/pilot light blackknob. Is this normal

No! It is not normal to smell any gas from a properly functioning water heater, or any other properly functioning gas appliance. Even a small gas leak can build-up in concentration, and lead to an explosion hazard, if left unchecked. Ventilate the area by opening windows slowly, avoid using any possible sources of ignition such as light switches, fans, vacuums, or anything that might give-off a static discharge. Call a professional you trust to inspect the heater ASAP.
Typically your local gas company will send out someone free of charge to determine the source of a leak, and shut off whatever is the culprit. They will not fix it, but they will make sure you don't blow-up your house, or neighborhood.

HI WE INSTALL H250FDN POOL HEATER . AFTER A DAY THE HEATER WAS INSTALLED CUSTOMER CALLED MANITOBA HYDRO BECAUSE IT WAS A STRANGE SMELL WHEN THE HEATER BURNING. GAS COMPANY CAME AND SHUT OF THE GAS FROM A...

The heater literally stinks for some time after it is installed as the fire tile burns in. Every heater we install makes my eyes burn if I get a good whiff of the fumes...Are you certain the utility actually tested the discharge air? My guess would be someone walked up and gave it a sniff and over-reacted to what is a normal odor from a new heater. You can of course double check your flames from below the burner tray. If they are nice bright blue standing 2 - 4 inches tall your heater is operating normally and the smell should subside shortly after it gets some steady use.

Just bought a samsung second hand - cooltech SR385NTS -it is very noisy is that normal and if they have a gas leak how can you tell and is it dangerous?

if unit is very old the compressor may be the noise but look at fans and tubing as a cause of the noise first . and the rubber insulator under the compressor . if you have a gas leak the unit will not cool and you cannot smell it . most units only use .5 oz of gas . this will not be dangerous . ps not good so smell it but generaly its harmless .. mm R 12 AND 134. ARE VERY SAFE ..
