If the unit comes on a builds pressure, stops normally and when the pressure drops TRIES to come back on BUT just hums, it is because the motor cannot overcome the internal pressure. This is usually because a part called an "unloader" valve has not let the pressure off or there is no unloader. If you post the model number, I can check.

SOURCE: Compressor air leak

hi first we have to find where the leak is comming from ,so you will have to remove the cover, secondly is the leak just from an external fitting?if so then you can see the problem and a simple adjustment or removal to re seal can be done ,if the leak appears to be from the pump head joint then the head will have to be removed and a replacement gasket fitted however i reccomend that if this is done then a new valve set be fitted at the same time
hope this helps ian

SOURCE: Extra fitting on my Porter Cable?

The porter cable compressor is equipped with a pressure relief valve. Mine has a ring attached to it. When you pull out on the valve, it releases all the pressure stored in the tank. Try pushing that valve back in, or if faulty replace it.

SOURCE: Porter cable pancake unit blows air after shut off.

tap on the check valve with a metal object. Its sticking open. The check valve is the brass fitting on top of the tank. When the valve sticks open it emits air from the area of the engine. If that doesn't work (which I would be surprised it doesn't), you'll need to purchase a new check valve. Good Luck!

SOURCE: My porter cable air compressor

The airr pressure cut off switch is not working or out of alignment. What you can do is to adjust the spring with the air pressure reading at your required pressure. Once this is done allow the air to flow so that the compressor will work again to cur off, you will have to trim once again to set it to the correct condition. If the spring assembly is not working well on pressure you can remove and reset. If the contact are dirty , the switch on may not start the compressor, in such case clean the contacts. But if you think that it is not acting responsive, the please replace the unit and do the settting as explained above.
I hope you try this out. Good day

How to remove muffler intake from Porter Cable CPF6020-1 air compressor

To remove the air filter intake muffle you will need to remove the 4 screws that hold the head on to the pump.
There is a O-ring under the head you will want to put a little vasoline on before you reassemble the head back to the pump.

The new muffler kit should be the KK-4981

Porter cable 3hp air compressor 130 psi no model number visible compressor runs builds up pressure and kicks off when the pressure is builded up in the tank// the compressor will not kick kick back on when...

Hi,
Check to see if the switch will kick in if the pressure is released from the hose going to activate it...if so then the problem is the air being trapped between a check valve and the switch in the hose...
I think that is your problem...
There should be a way for the air pressure to change and represent the tank air pressure accurately....
The different compressors all have different ways of checking the air and then allowing it to release as the the tank pressure decreases..

There is a small hole there somewhere that is clogged with dirt and or oil...find that and clean it and you are in business again...

Porter cable 3hp 130psi air compressor when the pressure drops th e compressor will not kick on to build the pressure back up we have replaced the switch 3 times did not help either time no model # visible

I am taking a guess that you have a model C2002. Did you replace the on/off switch or the pressure switch? It sounds like a bad pressure switch which is item #111, part #N003307SV on the following parts diagram. Here is the link to the diagram.

My compressor will start and run well but when it turns off it will turn but not run stalls and kicks the breaker

It sounds like the small valve that releases the pressure out of the main pipe that runs between the compressor and tank is not working once the tank is full and the motor automatically cuts off. You know this valve is working by the sound of a short spurt if air being released when the motor cuts off. Releasing this pressure means that the motor is able to restart easily because there is no load. If the valve is not releasing this air, the compressor is trying to start under full load which the motor is not capable of doing, hence the humming and popping of breakers due to a current overload as the motor tries to start. Motor burnout is possible if it keeps recurring.
This small release valve is attached to the Pressure control switch that switches the motor On & Off and usually has a small pipe going to it or is incorporated inside the Pressure Control Switch.

Compressor blows off, does not maintain pressure

Hi there. This is normal. The pressure is set to stop at around 120-140 PSI as a safety measure. It probably kicks in again around 80 PSI so as to remain pressurized between 80 and 140 PSI. Since most air tools operate in this range, it is ok for the compressor to maintain pressure in that range. You do not want to adjust the maximum pressure safety release valve as it could be extremely dangerous as certain components in the compressor may only be rated up to 140 PSI or slightly higher before they fail or blow apart.
