SOURCE: Kenwood KX-W6080 dual stereo cassette tape deck

I have the same unit which had the same problem. It has to do with dirty contacts on each tape mechanism.

Remove the main cover and look down on each tape mechanism. You will see 4 contacts on each unit. These come in contact with the tape. Remove each unit by removing 4 holding screws.

You will now be able to spray some contact cleaner into the front of the plastic contact cover. I removed the covers on both of the second from the right contacts so that I could clean them with an abrasive. These are the main ones.

Put everything back the way it was and the tape deck should work great.

SOURCE: Downloading an instruction manual for the K-700 Cassette Deck

Make sure you have the correct model # and go to the Yamaha web site. There is no K-700 but there is a K-720 (I have this tape deck).

SOURCE: yamaha k-720 cassette deck

No play but fast forward and reverse work ok--yes it is the drive belt. I disassembled the unit to find that the belt is actually sticky and stuck to both weighted flywheels, the drive motor pulley and managed to stick to itself. The drive motor is warm from trying to turn. Now, anyone know where to find the belt??

Stop Paying .. ????

if the take up side gets stuck it could feed excess tape and stop the mechanism. Look to see if both reels are turning when you push play. Remove cassette door for a better view if possible.

Make sure your tapes have NO slack in them. Fast forward and rewind one cassette all the way, then try again looking to see if both sides are turning. If not, you may have a belt that is old, stretched and slipping or it's split apart or just fallen off

Looking for schematic for Kenwood KX-55 stereo cassette tape deck

These dual cassette deck are rarely worth he effort to put repair time into. I checked Hi Fi Engine and they did not have anything. Is it worth a $100 repair bill? if not then look for a good solid single deck.

Yamaha cassette deck k-300

There is no instruction on how to put belts in a deck other than a parts break down of kind of where they go. A seasoned Technician would not need this but a Service Manual is always the best place to start.
The Belt kit can be ordered from Marrs Communication and that will take the responsibility of sizing and then ordering the correct belts. The goo can be removed with denatued alcohol or Ammonia. I have always used alcohol and it is not a pleasant job for anyone.

DECK B PROBLEM ON RARELY USED MACHINE

if the heads are getting jammed in the up position it may be a failing capstan belt in the transport not disengaging the transport properly. replace the capstan belt. If one has failed both will probably be bad.
