Question about Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKB - 500GB - 7200rpm - - IDE/EIDE - Internal 500 GB Hard Drive

2nd hard drive on Dell Dimension 8300 ( both ATA)

Not sure how to categorise the problem. My old Dell showed a full drive ( 80GB), mainly from my sons gaming. I installed a larger capacity Western Digital ATA drive and read the Dell info on jumper settings. My interpretation was that both the old drive and the new drive should be set to 'cable select'. This is how I set the disks. Now I am not so sure as someone told me the original drive which will still run the OS (WinXP) should be set to master, and the new drive to slave or cable select. The new drive will run my boys games.
After installing I went into Control Panel- Admin Tools- Comp. Management -Disc management- and then followed the Wizard to partition the disk. The disk management screen now shows the new disc as disk 1 (unallocated) and the original disc as Disk 0. The old disck has a blue line on the panel and the new disk has a dark grey line on the panel.
When I go into My Computer the new disk is not visible and 'c' drive still shows the old disk as being full.
I suspect that the disk may nnot have been formatted or that I have missed a step.
My question is how do I get the disk regognised and ready to install my sons games (Age of Empires etc).
By the way I used an anti staic strap and the new disk is showing as 'Dynamic' on the Disk Management screen.
Thank you for your help.

Setup the original harddrive as master and the new one as slave then the drive that comes up as c will be the master and the others will follow suit and when you install the games just change it in the install

Ribbons you should have 2 one for the cd rom drives and one for the harddrives, Look closley on the borad and it will say next to the connector which is which, the ata one will go to the harddrive and the ide one will go to the cd rom drive the end that only has one connector goes into the borad, the one with 2 connectors kinda close goes into the compoents, DO you have more than one hd if so you may need to find out which one is the master and which is the slave!

Replace the factory hard drive in my sisters Dimension 2100 with a eagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard Drive - 80GB - 7200rpm - Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) - IDE/EIDE - Internal. I go to run the Windows Xp CD that...

If the system is older, you may be limited by the BIOS. Many old systems do not recognize a partition with Windows.
Have you run fdisk for the format and partition setup?
Did you check the BIOS at startup? Make sure it recognizes the drive in BIOS and sees the partition. Hit F2 on bootup.
If it sees the drive, use a boot disk and run fdisk. Check the parameters and then run the install again.

Installing new seagate pata/100 hard drive and belkin ata/133 controller

There should be a tab on the back of the actual hard drive where you can switch it to CS "cable select", You just take the tab out of the slot that it is in and switch it to where the cable select is. I am sure that the drive is set to something different or it would be working.

Hard drive

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:

Selecting a replacement hard drive for Dell Inspiron 8500

pull out the hard drive and look on it see if it's an ATA or SATA
the brand does not matter, just the connection type I stated.

best place is here

Also, go to DELL.COM and support, type in your tag# and look for your system specs, it will tell you there what kind ok HD it has BUT best way is to pull HD out and look at the label.

this is a very simple job to do. just take your time.

If you mean you need to install windows, you need to set your cdrom drive as first boot device in advanced bios settings or it will try to boot into a non-existent windows. Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios. Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
