Drain the oil, tip it over and remove the blade and adapter and key stock if it is not part of the adapter. I drill a few small holes in the old seal and install some wood screws in them, using a claw hammer or flat bar I pry the old seal out. , make sure all is clean. I use a short section of PVC drain pipe to slide over the crankshaft to drive the new seal into place.

What shaft, where? Quote your engine number/model/type because there are exploded view parts lists all over the web. Then you could work out if its possible and worthwhile financially.

Briggs & stratton 500 series 158cc. Mowed all lawns, and worked just fine. Then (because it was such a jungle in my yard) I accidentally hit a decent sized piece of cement, but mower worked still after...

Hi there,
When you got it running immediately after the hit on the cement was it running normally? Similar power to before, or a bit rough?
Briggs & Stratton put an aluminium key between the flywheel and the crankshaft, so if you hit something big and stop the engine instantly it doesn't shear the shaft, just the key.
If it's only partially shorn it could still run, but with the timing a few degrees out.
The oil leak is most likely from tipping the motor forward.
The oil gets past the valves and pours into the combustion chamber.
We were told in the small engine workshop to never tilt a B&S side valve motor any way up than cylinder head up (that's the front, or spark plug side on this machine), or carburettor side up.

You'll need to either check/replace the key yourself if you have the skills to remove the flywheel, then you'll need to take out the spark plug (probably oiled up) and clean out the cylinder with some petrol / ether or similar, while pulling the pull start, before replacing the plug with a new one.

Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms
