When you place a disc in the drive can you hear the disc spin up, if not then the DVD drive maybe faulty. Try re-seating the DVD drive and if it still does not work then it is faulty and needs replacing.
Check if you can hear the xbox disc drive spin up when you insert a disc to make sure the drive isn't broken. If it spins up but can't recognize the disc, try using a friends disc that you know works in his xbox. If his disc works and yours does not, try getting a disc cleaner found in most Best Buy or other disc/electronics stores. If that does not work you will most likely have to contact Microsoft Support to send the xbox in for repairs to the drive.
Does it not acknowledge dvd disc only or cd or dvd both. If it doesn't read the dvd disc, or able to play dvd disc, but able to exlpore regular cd's, then you have a codec error, and you need to download a dvd codec like powerdvd for it for your system to play dvd disc. Check to see if your dvd-rom drive appears in the "my computer" window, if it is there, but wouldn't be able to play anything, then it could be a driver issue. so make sure in the hardware , the drivers is installed and working properly. If it is working properly and driver is installed, then you got a bad drive, the optical laser lenses isnt reading or the spindle ain't working anymore if you don't hear disc being loaded when inserting the disc.
If your ps3 disc drive still makes sound maybe the top lid of the disc drive is not in the correct spot. Have you opened it before? Thats how the disc drive will get out of line. If you havent opened it before it might just need a good cleaning and lubricated. How to fix it if its out of line is to take ps3 lid off take disc drive lid off hook it up and place a cd in it and let the drive accept the disc then put everything back together with the disc in the disc drive. Now it should work right.
it is probably an internal error with the dvd drive. if not check the dvd or cd you are putting in to make sure it is not scratched. if it isn't the disc it is prob the disk drive pop it out , what always works for me is, whipe the lens of the disc drive with a tiny amount of alcohol on a soft small cloth.(slowly) if that still doesn't work and your computer cannot detect the disc and it's content see what disc u are using and if your disc drive can support it.
If this happens in all the discs you put in, then you should consider looking at the processor and memory speed, and most importantly, the disc drive itself. Replace the drive, if nothing happens, then upgrade your memory and processor (CPU). If this happens with only one discs or with a few discs, see if your drive can read the type of discs you put in. There is a "+" and/or "-" on the disc, it should work properly with a +/- drive. If the drive has "+" on it, then it can only read discs with a "+" on it. Hope this helps . . .
