Try to reset the player:
Press the reset button on the front panel using a ball-point pen or similar tool.this will reset the built in microprocessor ..Check if its working ...

According to JVC, you can use either 4 or 8 ohm speakers. This would seem to indicate that the internal amp is not stable below 4 ohms.
Here's a link to the manual. The information is on page 29 under the "audio amplifier section" and shown as "load impedance".
