Kirby Heritage II not starting

OK, I just spent $70.00 getting a front motor bearing replaced and a tune-up. Two weeks later, I replaced my second belt, only to find out the rolled was frozen and unable to turn. Now, it should be good to go for a few more years, right??? Wrong!! My daughter used it to vacuum the upstairs and carried it downstairs. Now, it will not turn on. Any ideas?

I was using my Kirby Heritage II on the stairs and while bouncing it around the same problem occurred...(It will not run now.) The light on the body of the machine comes on when I switch it on but it does not run....I talked to a friend that had some experience with fixing kirbys. He said that he would first look to see if a wire got loose that leads to the motor. I have not opened it up yet.

My kirby heritage II always worked very well. Mostly I used it without the power brush and with the hose attachment only (great suction with floor attachments etc.) Then the last time I tried to use it, I plugged it in, stepped on the power button, and the motor did not activate. Strangely, one half of the red power light lit up (i would have thought the light would either light up or not, but one half of its length lit up red).

I had the same problem and it ended up being the switch (underneath the drive that turns the belt).
I took the a safety switch off of another vacum
cleaner and replaced it and it is now working.

There is a safety switch and if it's not connected right, the vacuum will not run. Readjust the front case where the brushroll is, taking it off and putting it back on might be enough.

Take the cover off to get to the wiring and check the brushes - that is where the clear-insulated black & green wires terminate at the motor sides under the plastic caps

How to remove a Kirby Heritage II Armature

The armature that holds the fan on is reverse threaded. It turns to the right to remove it. You can put a nail or nail punch in the hole on the armature and tap it gently to the right. this should loosen it enough to unscrew. There's a washer, then the fan, and a spacer that fit over the shaft.

Motor light comes on but motor does not start on Kirby Heritage II

Remember that the motor will not run unless the vacuum head or hose are properly installed. If this is not the problem, the most likely problem is that the carbon brushes in the motor are badly worn and will need replacement. A less likely problem is that the front safety switch is out of adjustment. While the light is on, remove the head and push the metal rod on the switch next to the fan inward to see if this causes the motor to run.

It is quite possible, it just needs lubed. The motor comes in direct contact with dirt so, you have to make sure the front bearing has a drop of oil on it from time to time. If it starts to scream at you within one month, after oiling, the bearing needs to be replaced.

Carbon Brushes wearing out quickly on Kirby Heritage II

4 possible reasons.
1 – one or both bearings are worn so armature (rotating part) wobbles as it is spinning and cause motor brushes to wear fast. Solution – change bearings too.
2 – Whoever replaced brushes – did not use some brush seating sticks to make cmutator smother and contour brushes to the shape of the comutator (not likely). Solution – appropriately install new set of brushes.
3 – Comutator is so warped that seating sticks do not help anymore – solution – new armature or turn the old armature.
4 – The fact that ONLY ONE brush was worn may mean that there is something wrong with the brush or housing. Maybe it could not move freely within the housing? I think this may be most likely cause it it may be a combination of all 4.Is it worth to fix? Hmm depends how much will it be. If this is 100+ - I’d say get newer Kirby for 300 ad enjoy the tech drive (Heritage does not have tech drive so it is much harder to vacuum with than the newer models)
