Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

This is about a 15 YEAR OLD Trane XE1000 30,000 BTU A/C unit. The A/C was not working, but right after I called to have someone come fix it, it started working again all by itself. When the unit was not working (for about 18 hours). The house got up to about 80 degrees with the thermostat set on 70. When the HVAC tech got here (next day), he told me the compressor is shot because the thermal limit switch inside the compressor is overheating. The area where the thermal switch is getting warm, but I'm not so sure that is not normal. When the service tech eventually turned the unit back on, the compressor did not come on right away. He said it should come on immediately. I am also not so sure about that. Of course, 5 minutes after he left, the compressor came on and started freezing out the house. So, I am thinking that the thermal limit switch may be sticking, but maybe the compressor is NOT supposed to come on immediately, maybe it cools in 2 stages to improve efficiency: maybe first it just runs the fan to try to cool and then, if that doesn't work, the compressor comes on to get things cooling down. Maybe therre'a a tempreature difference that szays to try that (or not). It's only been about 80 degrees the past two days. So, do I need to spend $3000 for a compressor or, as he recommended, $7000 for an entirely new unit? Or is my unit actully okay for a while yet?? Financially, I need to wait a while if I can.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

I need to buy a new fan motor for an TRANE AC unit, the part number is Emerson K55HXFHD-7740, but I found in the internet that someone replaced with a Dayton 4M226J. Do you think can I do it ?

If the volts, amps, and other name plate data is the same as the old motor I see no reason why it will not work. I have also replaced my condenser fan motor with a different brand. I took my old motor to Grainger supply and one of the Guys there helped me match up a motor. I saved quite a bit of money by not buying the dealer motor. It was installed last year and has been running like a champ.

I had a power surge on my 15 year old HVAC residential Trane Unit. I can either have my insurance repair it or I can pay the difference to replace. I do have coverage to pay for Alabama state building...

13 seer minimum for new installs. I have seen ratings as high as 18 or more on
some units (410A systems)
I recently replaced my system with a 13 seer R22 system, since they are
more easily serviced and I am very familiar with them. Given the average lifespan of
a system before major service is around 10 years depending on model.
I have worked on Trane, Carrier, Intertherm and Goodman units and prefer the Goodman
units, as they seem to be much quieter running and are built in America.

No heating, cooling or fan.

I'm confused. You have a Trane, but are asking about the Goodman warranty. I missed something there I'm sure, sorry.

"IF" Trane has a recall or warranty issue, then any qualified technician should be able to help you with that. The parts would be provided by trane in such an event, but unless the unit is less than 1 year old, chances are you will have to pay for the labor.

This link takes you to the TRANE contact page. They can answer any warranty/recall questions you have.

You need to replace your control board, but if you are can repair it by your self you can change the relay that supply the fan and condenser.
