Channel auto scan repeated 3 times with no success.

Main system control memory IC fault. This is a very small IC; have 8 solder terminals, and can be located very near to the main system control-chroma IC. Check and replace it. Be sure to replace it with the same number printed on it; in all respect. Otherwise, it won't go. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Before replacing it, try a reset to this set, and then check.
There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here.

How do I run a channel scan on new tv

Once hooked up go into the menu under set up. You will have to choose between air/antenna or cable. Select your choice and then it will prompt you to do a channel scan automatically or manually. Select automatic. If you are doing this as an antenna it should prompt you as to whether you want to scan for digital, analog or both. Select both.

My screen keeps telling me to auto scan channels?

This is for basic cable TV. If you have basic cable, go ahead and let it scan channels. If you have digital cable or anything else and use a INPUT or HDMI or RCA to watch TV then just ignore the scan channels prompt as you have a cable box that handles all that for you.

I have the box installed and on. Now what do I do to get the local stations on my TV

What box - satellite/cable/digital-to-analog converter? This tv has a digital (ATSC) tuner built in. So if you are looking for OTA channels, use antennaweb.org or tvfool.com to find out what direction to point your antenna and what antenna you need. Then connect the antenna's coax cable to your TV. Antennaweb is very conservative and assumes an outdoor antenna. tvfool.com will list several more channels and the different antennas that are needed for various distances between your location and the station transmitters.

If you are sharing one antenna between several tvs or tv and other devices, you may need an amplifier in addition to the splitter. (Unfortunately, these can get damaged by surges as well. I've lost certain channels after a lightning strike turned the amp into a filter for one part of the RF signal spectrum.)

Once you have the antenna connected and pointing in the direction of the desired station, you will need to scan for channels. If this is the first time the tv is set up, you will be prompted for menu language, the input type and then asked if you want the TV to auto-scan for channels. Otherwise, hit Menu, use the left and right arrows to get to the Channels menu option and press the + button in the center of the arrow keys. Next use the up and down arrows to set the incoming signal (if needed) - the item is labeled Cable and is a Yes/No (again press + to select item and to enter the change). Continue down to the Auto-program and let that run. You can add/remove channels from the resulting listing with the Channel Skip/Add option just below Auto-program.

    I hope this helps.

When I tried to download javas new update it sent me a message saying windows installer is not opeating properly. I'm running Vista home basic. Can you help

Try to ensure that Windows Installer service is running, or force start it. 1.. Open Run, and type in services.msc then press Enter. Alternatively, go
to Control Panel -> Administrator Tools -> Services.
2.. Locate Windows Installer in the all install services listing.
3.. Verify that the Status is Started. If the Status column is blank,
right click on Windows Installer and select Start.
4.. If you get error trying to force start the Windows Installer service,
try to change the Startup Type to Automatic (default is Manual), and then
    restart the computer.

I would suggest you to run SFC scan which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.
    Steps to perform SFC scan:

    1. Click the Start button
    2. From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories
    3. In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option
    4. From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the 'Run as administrator' option
    5. If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorization prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password etc.
    6. In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter
    7. A message will appear stating that 'the system scan will begin'
    8. Be patient because the scan may take some time
    9. If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue
    10. If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"
    11. After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window restart the computer and check.
