Nevertheless, the panel makes these general recommendations for people over age 80:
  • A target systolic blood pressure (the first or top number in a two-number blood-pressure reading) should be 140 to 145 if the patient tolerates the side effects of treatment.
  • Patients should not have a systolic blood pressure below 130 or a diastolic blood pressure (the second or bottom number) below 65.
  • For very elderly patients whose high blood pressure doesn't come down with initial treatment, the combination of a type of blood pressure **** known as a RAAS blocker, a calcium antagonist, and a water pill is often effective.
  • Very elderly patients may benefit from lifestyle changes that lower blood pressure:losing weight, reducing salt in the diet, drinking less alcohol, and taking up the DASH diet.

How to stop nosebleeding

Decide the cause of the nose bleed
If it follows a blow to the head and the blood is thin and watery it could indicate leakage from the brain.
Fresh bright red blood would indicate a ruptured blood vessel in the nostril.
Sit the patient down
Lean the head forward to allow the nostrils to drain.
Breathe through the mouth
Pinch the nostrils to stem the flow, keeping the head leaning forward.
Hold this position for 10 minutes. Repeat, if still bleeding.
When bleeding stops, avoid exertion and blowing the nose.
If bleeding persists after 30 minutes seek medical advice

Blood test results

Blood tests sometimes called blood panels, are one of a physician's most basic tools. Not that long ago, doctors diagnosed patients through observation and the patients' answers to questions.
Blood tests allow a doctor to see a detailed analysis of any disease markers, the nutrients and waste products in your blood as well as how various organs (e.g., kidneys and liver) are functioning.
During a physical examination, your doctor will often draw blood for chemistry and complete blood count (CBC) tests as well as a lipid profile, which measures cholesterol and related elements.

Had a Whipple surgery 7 years ago, starting to have stomach aches, constant nausea, diarrhea, blotting, what should I be most concerned about

Carla: According to "Q. What are the long-term effects of the Whipple procedure?
A. Most patients will completely recover from their operation within two months. In some cases, it may take up to six months to recover from the surgery. Most patients will need to take a daily vitamin with iron. Some patients will have temporary trouble regulating their blood sugar levels. Your doctor will determine if you need long-term medication to control your blood sugars. Some patients (i.e., overweight patients and pre-existing diabetics) may require insulin after their surgery. "

However, as an RN, I would say the most common problems years later can be development of scars that cause abdominal pain. Many people have this cared for by a procedure known as lysis of adhesions.

Wide variability in readings taken within a ten-minute span on same patient. From 122/95 to 104/55 same patient, different arms. Patient being monitored for hypotension.

Time between readings must be enough to allow circulation in the arm reaches steady state again, or else if readings are close to each other, each subsequent reading is lower than preceding ones due to previous pressing the arteries and limiting blood circulation. 5 min is good enough time between readings and averaging. Massage the arm before next reading.
