Question about Ruud UBHC Air Conditioner

1 Answer

I have a RUDD AC 5 ton and the inside unit is running and blowing but the air is not cooling and the outside unit is not turning on. I checked all the breakers and tried pressing the reset button on the bottom. Is there a trick to pressing that button....nothing seems to be happening...do I need to hold it down for a certain amount of time? Thanks! It is getting hot in here....

Is the contacror pulled in? If not check the low voltage to see why it isn't, if it is, check for voltage out the other side with a meter.

Is the furnace fan (indoor fan ) running. If not the problem is with the inside unit. It supplies the control power to operate the entire system and has a control fuse on the circuit board. If it is running but not the outside unit then the problem is outside.

I'm looking to purchase a Rudd 2 stage model, 16 SEER, 5 ton along with a 100000 BTU 95% furnace. I have a two story home and will only be using the 1 AC. Will the Rudd cool both floors?

Assuming that there are ducts ran upstairs and downstairs, it all depends on the square footage of the living spaces, i.e. bedrooms, living room, dining room, etc. You need an average of 1 cfm per sq ft. For every 1 ton of air, you have an average of 400cfms. So your 5 ton unit will cool/heat 2000 sq ft. A 16 seer unit with a 95% furnace is a nice buy and you will notice the difference for sure. Hope this helps!

Can I mix brands/tons when installing AC unit to existing coils?

First off - the 'rule of thumb' is 600' per ton of Air Conditioning. In other words your old unit is a 2 ton unit. So - 2 tons x 600' = 1200'. As you can see if you install the 2.5 ton unit - you will be installing a AC that 'could' cool a 1500 sq ft house (2.5 x 600' =1500 sq ft.). Slightly more than what you need; and the 3.5 ton unit is 'way to big,' (3.5 x 600' = 2100 sq ft.).

Note: fyi - many in the AC business will sometimes refer to tonnage in btu's, i.e. 1 ton = 12000 btu - hence a '2 ton unit' can also be referred to as a 24000 btu unit and vice versa.

So... from the above - you can easily see that "2 tons" of Air conditioning is what is required to cool the 'average' home of 1100 sq ft. "roughly speaking."

Note: it is always best to have a professional 'size' your cooling/heating needs.

One of your questions was could you 'mix tonnage?'

The answer is 'usually you don't mix the tonnage of your outside/inside units.' However, professionals sometimes do (mix the tonnage) in certain situations, and installing a 2.5 ton outside unit with an existing 2 ton inside unit is often done, however, there are some 'tech issues' here and - I would "again" recommend that you call a Service Tech to help you with the sizing/mixing of your cooling/heating needs.

hope this has helped

Hello, I have a 1.5 ton rudd ac/heat pump

Your outside unit is not defrosting. You need to call a service tech to check it out. Defrost board sensor or low on gas. Also you amy have an outside tstat that is not working correctly. Rus

Both inside and outside unit running but not cold

No, there is really not much you can do to test the amount of freon level in the system. The best thing you can do is to be sure the outside coil is as clean as you can get it. I usually use a grease cutter type chemical and a hose. Just be very careful not to bend the fins with the water pressure. Also kill the power at the breaker or disconnect prior to cleaning.

Reverse Cycle not cooling!

I had a service man come out and he said the compressor was not coming on so he installed a hard start in parallel with capacitor solving the problem and is working normal now.

Non-working outside unit

If your unit is blowing heat inside and it's not a heat pump. It will be most likely electric heat in your case.
Sounds like you have a split unit meaning the condenser is outside and the cooling and the heat features are inside or under your home.If your Rudd is a heat-pump the outside unit will cycle/blow cold air outside in winter and hot air will cycle/blow outside during the summer season. Now, if for some reason the heat  is not coming on inside the house, would be the only reason that you would need to be concerned. Being a heat relay or breaker of could cause that problem. Hope this helps you, Sea Breeze
