Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Open Question

Kenmore side by side. Fridge only gets to about 50°. Replaced broken damper and thermistor to be safe. Cleaned condenser coils. Damper open at first then closes later, even when temp. Set to 33.

SOURCE: Kenmore Freezer works, Refrigerator doesn't

As per the problem, it does not indicates towards compressor problem.Because idf compressor stops working, then freezer section will not freeze. But in your case the freezer is working properly, so this clears that compressor is working properly.--------- As per your problem, its defrost problem.--------
The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site.------------ As you mentioned that defrost heater and defrost thermostat both are working good. Then problem indicates towards defrost board.------------------ -------------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.---------------------
NOW read this point carefully. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning.---------- But when freezer section reach the set temperature, then thermostat senses the temperature and give command to defrost board that , now start the defrost heater. So defrost heater gets hot and melts the ice.The ice melting water in the freezer section, drains from the drain line to the pan above the compressor. This drained water gets dissolved in air when compressor gets hot.---------- But in your case most probably the thermostat is not sensing the freezer temperature, so the defrost cycle is not starting and if defrost cycle will not start, then cool from freezer will not get to the fridge section.--------- So most probably its thermostat, but if thermostat checks ok, then its faulty defrost control board.--------- For getting thermostat testing instructions, click the link below:--- http://howtobyme.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-test-defrost-thermostat-on.html --------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

SOURCE: Why is Fridge not cooling well?

The part number you need is going to be WR09X10050. This is for the damper assembly, but while you are at it change out part number WR55X10150. this is the part that controls the damper and more than likely if one fails the other will be soon to follow

You will need to see if you run the self diagnostics found in the=> Service Manual The problem with the damper could be caused by a defective thermistor, ice build up or just a defective damper. Your model uses the=> WR09X10050 Damper with Thermistor Assembly Running diagnostics wil help you to locate the problem better if you can read and do the from the Service Manual. Fridge is not cooling

Hello,

When the refrigerator side is getting too cold this is because the control of the compressor has gone bad in some way...

There a few different things that could cause the unit to lose control over the temperature of the fridge side.

If your refrigerator has a damper door that opens and closes to allow cold air to move to the fridge side the damper linkage or the damper motor may have broken or gone bad.

The coils in your fridge may have frozen over and now the air does not move at all so then the ice builds up and can freeze parts of the fridge side.

The thermostat has gone bad and so now the compressor runs continually. This will not be noticed readily on the freezer side but will show up quickly on the fridge side.

Many newer model refrigerators use an electronic sensor or thermistor to read the temperature and supply the info for the circuit board and often a digital readout.

So, here is how I would go about troubleshooting this problem.

Check the coils for ice, defrost the coils with a heat gun or hairdryer, then check for the reason why they iced over. Defrost control or defrost timer bad? Evaporator fan bad?

Check the damper door to see if it is stuck in the open position. If it is then check the motor and the linkage.

Check to see if the refrigeration unit will shut down if the thermostat or digital setting is turned up to a higher temperature. If it continues to run then find the cause and fix it. It may be a bad thermostat, sensor, or control board.

Sometimes with a change is weather to a cooler climate this will be enough to also affect the inside temperatures. Make sure that a bit of adjustment in the thermostat or setting of the temperature will not solve your problem very simply.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

. kenmore side by side blows warm air, after

Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. The relay is a small usually black cube shaped electrical part plugged into the compressor or wired to it nearby. It may appear burnt or rattle when shaken if it's bad. The two connections should show continuity with an amp meter. If it's good then it's most likely the compressor causing the problem.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).
If it's iced up really heavy you have an auto defrost problem. Melt the ice with a hairdryer and check the defrost system.

Hi Louisa. Welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
The symptom your describing is usually caused by the air damper assy. failing to close. It can however be caused by a bad thermistor. There are 4 models of this unit that end in HEB, HEQ, HES, and HEW. I am using the model number MSD2657HEB and the parts that can cause your problem are the damper (item 7) this ink:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5171229&diagram_id=28488614#d28488614
or the thermistor (Item 18) of the above link.

It could also be caused by the control itself (Item 13) but I doubt that at this time. I seriously believe it will either be the Thermistor or the Damper.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Sub zero 532. freezer works fine --0 degrees. fridge wont get below 50 degrees. cleaned condenser fins- still no decrease in temp

check the fan that runs between the freezer and the fridge --check fan for ice blockage -debris-or damage / clean or clear blockage --if not running test wiring and connections as well as motor /repair or replace //also check fan damper is not frozen or blocked its flap that opens and closes for air to flow //----ur fridge side is cooled from the the freezer side the cold air is blown in from the freezer if fan or damper is not working correctly than fridge is usually warm and freezer is working properly

There are a couple of things that can cause this. Thermistors, mainboard, fan and damper.
Start with the cheapest.
1. Check Thermistors - Pull J1 and check connector pins 1,2,3 and 4 to pin 5. They should beapproximately 15Kohms. In your case, the freezer thermistors (pin 3 and4 ) should be higher than the fresh food (pins 1 and 2).
2. Fan and Damper - Fresh food fan should be on and damper from freezer to fresh food should be open. If not, check that fans spin by hand and damper doesn't look damaged
3. At this point it is most likely the motherboard.
