Question about Laser Office Equipment & Supplies

Open Question

School Mate SC-5050 CD player is making a thumping/skipping noise. Plays some of the CD and then stops. Same with multiple CDs.

I've tried cleaning the laser - no change. Needed for a 1st grade class asap.. Any ideas?

SOURCE: cd skips

If the unit continues to skip after cleanig the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol, the optics are failing and need to be replaced. These units use Sony optics (KSS-213C I think) and are readily available for $25 or so. Any service shop should be able to replace this for under $100 total.

I had a rca system similar to this little different. It's a problem you'll find in any cd player after awhile. You'll need to replace the laser. It's quite easy google for some instructions to replace a cd laser. Look around for a laser that can read cd's and cd r and cd rw and you'll be ok. The disassembling might be a bit tuff but it's worth it. I had to replace my hifi laser and after i did sound was incredible again no skipping. Make sure when opening your system you power it on and unplug it to make sure all charge is gone wait 30 minutes or so before you go and operate.

Cds won't play

OK, your discription of your problem is rather vague.

Do they try to play but skip or make god awful noises? Or do you have no audio at all?

If they are skipping check to make sure there are no smudges on the underside of the CD. If so clean them with a soft cloth,

Sometimes severe scratches can cas the same problem. You can buff out some scratched using tooth paste or you can by a scratch remover that they sell in stores (it is a gadget that will clean and buff out some scratches available in many stores).

If you have any of the label missing then this is a worse issue. It is actually the top of a CD that you need to be most careful about scratching because if you remove the laquer that protects the silver layer of the CD it will remove part of the silver with it along with any audio or data that is on it. There is no repair for this.

If you have ruled out a damaged or dirty CD then be sure you are not trying to play a CD that has data files intended for computers on a player that cannot open them. The best way to do this is to check the CD on a computer and open the drive folder and view the contents of the disk. Files such as MP3, WAV, WMA and others will not play on a standard CD player. If the files are CDA that is a standard audio CD formatting. So next see if the disk plays on the computer.

If the CD plays on a computer then return to the CD player and attemp playing again. Make sure that the player recognizes the CD being in the tray. Also, verify, if you can that the CD is spinning within the player when you play. If the CD is not spinning or the player does not recognize rge disk try a disk you know to be undamaged.

If you still have problems then you will have to have your player repaired or replace it.

Technics SC -HD 501 CD jumping and skipping

If this happens on all CDs then most like the drive is bad or lens is dirty You can try cleaning out the heads using a cleaner disc. If you have a way to get to the lens you can try cleaning it manually. But most likely. It's one of the following dirty lens, bad motor, bad speed control.

Its time to replace the optical unit ( lens ) of the CD player. Brace yourself the unit on some of those old players can cost more than a new DVD player.

My 760 recorder keeps show no audio when I try to record. I've tried hooking it up serval ways no luck. However it plays perfect.

You can not use normal Data CDs. Use CD-R Digital Audio CDs or CD-R Audio recordable CDs. If you use correct Digital Audio Recordable CDs, it will show OPC. Once you press Recording, audio out is coming. Otherwise you can not listing to audio. Please read manual carefully. Above will solve your matter.

yes here is a simple easy way to get them to stop skipping, stick them in the freezer portion of your fridge, only if the cds have scratches on them, even the smallest scratch can cause a perfectly working cd player to make the cd skip, stick the cd in the freezer for about 15 or 20 mins and pull it out and play it, i have used this method for a lot of my video games as well and have never had to buy any "cd player cleaner cds" i hope this helps
