My HP Pavilion computer unit will not turn on. Have tried unplugging, replugging; all the cords/plugs look good. Unit is quite old (at least 10 years). Monitor still seems to work. Is it dead?

Could simply be your power supply. Please check that the power cord is connected to the computer and that the power supply switch (located in the back next to where the power cord plugs into the computer) is in the on position( I = on 0= off). IF the power cord is plugged into a working outlet and the power supply is on then it can only be one of two things. You have a bad power supply( easy fix that will only cost you about $50 or less) or your motherboard is bad. If you took this into a shop for repair they would pull out the power supply and replace it with a know working one. If that does not fix the problem then they would tell you your motherboard is bad. Power supplies are fairly easy to replace and, for your unit, very cheap, about $15 from newegg.

If you have no activity at all, no lights, no noise at all etc. it is probably the power supply. It can be replaced with some mechanical skill and attention to where the wires plug in, but the major problem is the age. Older computers have a different power supply then currently available. If you have data you need to retrieve the physical hard drive can be removed and placed in a relatively inexpensive USB housing and accessed from a new computer. If you want to try and get it repaired find an older, small repair shop and with luck they may have or be able to locate the correct replacement. Since it is 10 or more years I would not put much money into repairing it so check in advance about minimum rates etc. so you don’t end with a money pit. Good Luck

What may have happened is that if you had your side panel off the cable from the power button to the motherboard may have come loose try re attaching it. if thats not the solution try replacing your power unit. they are fairly cheep on sites like www.tigerdirect.com. and easy to swap. heres a link on youtube on how to swap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvClS_M-09o&feature=PlayList&p=618916B5FEF87164&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=51

PC - dies no power, but comes to life after a few days if left unplugged. Then it works and at somepoint dies again (no fans, power, etc) How do I fix?

My first thought would be that it is a power supply problem. But, before replacing the power supply, unplug the power cord from computer and wall plug, plug it in a gain making sure it goes in all the way.
If still flaky, its probably a power supply problem.
Hope it helps.

pull out the pwr cord and press the pwr button for one min and then release. this process is called as power drain. replug the pwr cord at the back of the computer and check. if its works then good or else replace the SMPS the power unit inside the computer. for sure it has gone bad. power unit is easily available in nearby retail outlets.

When I connect my Garmin Nuvi 200w to my car to charge it does not work. It just receive charge but does not work. If I disconnect it the GPS It work.

Are you using the garmin power cord or are you using an aftermarket cord? Some after market cords have usb plugs that although they plug right in to the power port on the unit, they tell the unit that you are updating the database. The unit displays only a picture of a computer connected to the unit and that's all it will do. Their is a way around this. Simply wait until the unit displays the about photo of the computer attached and then unplug the power cord from the unit. After the screen clears immediately replug in the power chord. This must be done quickly before anything appears on the screen. If you're too slow, simply repeat this step until you manage to replug the unit before anthing appears on the screen. Once plugged in as about the unit will operate normally on the external power source until you either turn it off or unplug it. Simple repeat above when ready to resume use.

HP 1610 "scanner Failure" message

It MIGHT be that the unit is no good. The downside of ALL IN ONE products. BUT, unplug the power cord from the back of the all in one, then unplug the USB cable, then unplug power cord from wall. Wait 10 minutes and plug everything back in in reverse order and see if it works. If not it is bad.

I also have HP 6310xi all in one printer with power reset message

1. Please make sure that the power adapter is working properly. Also connect the unit to a different power outlet and verify.

If the issue persists, please perform the following steps:

Step 1: Power Reset:

1. Disconnect the unit from the computer. Verify that the unit is switched ‘on’. Unplug the power cord from the back of the unit.

2. Wait 30 seconds.

3. Plug-in only the ‘power cord’.

4. Repeat steps 2-4 two more times.

5. On the third time after plugging the unit into power, reconnect the connection port from the all-in-one to your computer.

If the issue persists, perform the following steps:

1. Take the cartridges out of the unit. Unplug the power cord from the unit.

2. Press and hold # and 3 buttons together while plugging in the power cord back to the unit.

3. Turn on the unit and insert the cartridges.

This will solve the problem...

HP C6180 all in one

Have an HP C6180 that would not turn on, no power. Unplugged and replugged the unit in the back - no fix. Unplugged the unit at the wall socket, reconnected and I thought I heard a faint click in the power supply. Hit the on button and the C6180 powered up - no issues. Without knowing for sure, possibly the power supply has some type of surge arrest safety switch.
