If it is the older Bernina 830 Record, could be some of the parts have seized due to lack of oil. Frequently, seldom used functions (levers, dials, feed dog control) are the first signs.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

Be sure to move the dials/levers and apply oil there as well.

Looping stitches

Hello Shirley, I suggest you make sure the machine is threaded correctly. If you have a factory manual, that would be a help. It sounds as though the needle thread is not threaded through the take up arm and/or take up arm spring. The needle thread tensioner might be too loose.

What you're describing is commonly called a 'bird's nest' for fairly obvious reasons. There are, unfortunately, a number of things that can cause it.

Troubleshooting steps:

1. Clean it! I've seen machines that haven't been properly cleaned for years. If there is lint, dust or dirt in the bobbin area especially, the looper won't work correctly and the stitch won't form. Be sure to take out the bobbin when you do this.
2. Oil it. Follow your manufacturer's instructions for this. If you don't have a book, contact Bernina and get one.
3. Change the needle and check the tensioning disks to be sure that no lint, old thread, etc. has got caught in it.
4. Adjust the tension. This can be tricky, so take it in small increments. Here, again, a manufacturer's book is a godsend.
5. If none of this avails, or it only partially fixes the problem, take it to a reputable service center (most fabric, quilting, etc. stores have or know someone) and have them adjust the timing. Most machines need this done every 1-5 years depending upon the usage.

Good luck with it. I wish I had an older Bernina, they're good machines.

You may need some cleaning, oiling or maintenance?
Tips for cleaning and maintenance:

Oil the hook after having used the content of 3 to 4 bobbins. The machine
screen will display a reminder

Increasing noise of the motor and/or irregular
stitch formation can also be an indication that oiling is necessary

Remove any lint from the hook and the bobbin area, then remove the stitch plate

Needle will not pick up bobbin thread (Bernina 830) despite tightening handwheel therefore no stitching. Have cleaned bobbin mechanism and have checked and rechecked bobbin threading. Have tightened

Make sure needle is inserted with the scarf(small indentation above needle eye) to the back and fully inserted. Otherwise it could be out of time which would require a technician.

Bernina 820 Tension Error Message

You need to take your machine in for service. The 8 series machines have new upper tension parts that can be installed under manufacturer warranty and MAKE SURE your Bernina dealer is well trained on the 820 and 830 or they'll never get it adjusted right. The 8 series are just all around buggars when they're out of whack.

How do I use the button hole foot on the Bernina 807 minimatic?

There isn't an automatic button hole on this machine. You can do it manually. Thread the bobbin thread as usual, but put it through the little hole on the hook in the bobbin case. Set the stitch length between 0 and 1, like a nice satin stich. Set the needle position to the far left and the stitch width to 2. Sew down the left side. Center the needle, set the width to 4 and lower the feed dogs, stitch about 6 stitches across the bottom. Then reverse the direction, set the needle to the right, stitch width to 2 and go back up the right side. Lower the feed dogs again, set a wide stitch and finish the top.

Another good option is to buy a universal presser foot shank from Bernina and then attach an old cam type buttonhole attachment from Singer. They make beautiful buttonholes and you can even do a keyhole button hole.

Old bernina 830 stitching problem: tight

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.
