Take a look at the chart on needle and thread I posted as a tip, but generally, you'll need to use a larger needle, something like a 14 or maybe even a 16, but you shouldn't need heavy-duty thread.

Make sure the needle is inserted correctly, with the flat side towards the back of the machine, and pushed up as far as it will go.
