Question about Samsung Televison & Video

1 Answer

Re: Samsung UN46B7100WFXZA TV which stopped working after we had a close lightning strike - also took out AT&T modem. Power light comes on, alternating 'clicking', black pic screen, nothing else.

Checked two fuses on power supply board and they are not blown. I have viewed on-line tutorials and videos attempting to see if I could determine if it was a capacitor problem. I have taken the back off and looked at all of the capacitors on both the power panel and main panel and they all look fine to me. The symptoms are as follows: Upon powering on the TV, the white 'power' light on the TV panel illuminates and the TV makes alternating 'clicking' sounds with the light remaining on but the LED screen remains black. I suspect this may be a power supply board problem but do not have the confidence in that guess to think about ordering a replacement. Based upon this rendition of the symptoms, do you think it is likely a main power board issue? Any insight and assistance you can offer would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance, Barry Fort Lauderdale, FL

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
Before going further; try a hard reset first. If it does not help you, replace the main digital board. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here.

Samsung Microwave Oven SMH7159 No Power

The power outage may have been accompanied with a power surge. That can happen with lightning strikes, or if a large inductor (electric motor or equivalent) happened to be on the same power line at the time of the outage. There's a good chance a surge took out the control panel.

Magnavox TB100MW9 DTV Converter repair

After a close-by lightning strike, my Magnavox TB100MW9
Digital TV Converter box stopped working. I took it apart and found a
shorted diode (the fat one on the power side of the board)
marked with the number SB340. From the NTE cross-reference
web site, I found a replacement diode, NTE586 (Si, Fast
Switching, Schottky Barrier Diode) that cost me $2.40 at
a local electronic parts store. I replaced the diode and
it works fine!

Would replacing the main board fix my TV?

We can't predict what might have been happened during a lightning strike. If the TV is dead now; the main power supply regulator board [SMPS] board is fault. If so, you have to replace it first. then only we can get information about the condition of the main board. If the TV was connected to external Ariel or cable; before the lightning stroke; the possibility to damage to the main board too is there upto 80%.
In fact, if both of this boards are damaged, it might cost around 2/3rd of the total cost of a new TV.
The decision left to you. Do whatever you want.

Will a nearby lightning strike cause a power board failure?

It could happen yes it would depend where the strike entered the TV. Not all lighting strikes hit on the electrical lines, on a TV they can come through the cable, as well as a antenna if you have one hooked up.

Lightning strike near house. Power surge came through phone line and ethernet cable. lost modem, computer, time machine, house security system, and HP Officejet 6310xi. When printer is connected to power...

From your description the HP printer is damaged beyond repair, when a lightning strike occurs it also went through the power supply affecting the main board and destroying ic's and other parts. It is more than likely the interface cord from the computer to the printer also took a jolt hitting the printer from both sides finishing off any chance of recovery, you would be further ahead replacing the item.

Lightning strike came in via cable not power.

Your tv is going to need internal repairs. I recommend using our premium service to help walk you through these repairs. Or contact a local repair service.

To avoid this in the future I recommend an inline surge protector or a "green" switch.

An inline surge protector makes sure that all power to your tv comes through at the same level and does not spike or fall. It has a battery backup as well.

A green switch is a way of rewiring your home or your entertainment center to allow you to disconnect all power to your entertainment center when you are away, when a storm is coming, or when you are simply not using the system. A remot control can restore the power.

The average home entertainment center has one of the highest drains on electricity in the average home for appliances that are not in use. that is what makes the green switch appealing.
