Question about Celestron Optics

Open Question

I purchased a new celestron 127eq and after setting it up the slow motion control seems to be to hard to turn the RA control. It would put an extra strain on an RA motor. Is there a way to lubricate?

SOURCE: Can't release RA axis manually

I had one come in like this. AS you say the RA axis should be free to rotate in the RA housing when the clutch lever is released. The cylinder that the worm is machined on is binding on the axle. This doesn't overly effect normal tracking, but makes gross adjustments impossible. The only solution is to tear the mount down and finish the parts to eliminate the interference. Google astronomyboy for the how to. I have to warn you that I had to heat the cylinder and axle in the oven at 250 for 30 minutes before they would separate. don't use the wife's good oven mits!! When I finish these parts I use Soft Scrub (w/o bleach) as a grinding compound. It's basically bicarb in a jell. HTH, Geo.

You would need an equatorial platform to polar align. There are no setting circles on a stock XT??

Are you looking through the eyepiece at the side or the finder scope that sits along the top? I can't think of anything else! Sorry.

I have never had a telecope before and have purchased the Celestron 114EQ modelr n 31042 Im looking for step by step instructions on how to use it

Do you have a manual?

This is a small reflector style telescope on an equatorial mount-- the mount must be POLAR ALIGNED in orderr to be used properly. Guess you did not know that when you bought an EQUATORIAL mount.

Read this:
http://www.astronomy.net/articles/4/polaralign.html

Once the scope is polar aligned place the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the focuser. The moon should be your first target at night. the RA knob and the DEC knobs (slow motion controls) are used to keep the object centered in the eyepiece.

The DEC Slow Motion Cable Inoperative in both directions

Have you tightened down the clutches? This is a simple mechanism that turns a small gear when you turn the knobs.

If the gears are broken you will need to buy a new mount from Celestron:

CG5 is brand new-not 30days old yet. Mount slews before a star is selected for alignment and continues to slew about the RA until power is cut. What is wrong. Tried 2 different power sources and factory...

You should return the scope under warranty-- however a bad power supply-- and or a bad hand controller cable can cause these symptoms called a "runaway slew".

Get a separate 12 volt power supply and the proper cigarette lighter style power plug.

The clutch is not engaging in RA. Maybe the gears are not actually meshing together? A loose worm gear?

You can open it up and look and see if anything obvious is loose. Otherwise it's a trip back to Celestron.

CELESTRON 127EQ faulty magnification

It won't increase viewing power by hundreds of time but it should be able to show you a close up view of the moon and planets where they look closer (or with the moon, parts of it look closer). When you say it looks further away, something is quite wrong as you know. It sounds like the eye piece is backwards in the mount? Can't imagine what else would make it smaller. Also can't imagine you could even get it in backwards. I have a scope by Meade that is essentially the same Newtonian design. Best of luck.

Hand control comes up with no response 16

bintangchris: error 16 indicates a bad Hand controller, you may need to buy another one, also check all your connections going to the head assembly. Also error 16/17 indicates the HC cant communicate with the the RA/DEC control boards. It may need to go back to Celestron for repair.
