Question about Plumbing

1 Answer

For a tub overflow washer (Part# PPC826-3) where should the "thick end" go - top or the bottom? Is pasting a little silicone recommended on it so that it has a better seal after I tighten the screw?

I have a leak from my bath tub which I have narrowed it down to the overflow drain.I have resealed the bath drain and there is no leak from there. It is a MAACO tub with and "Ezy Touch" drain plug. The overflow faceplate has just one screw. Thank you.

The thicker end goes up because of the sloped end of the bathtub. You should not need to apply any sealant - the gasket is compressed as the screw is tightened.

Testimonial: "Tom, thank you very much for your prompt response. That's what the diagram shows on the back of the package. But when I Googled about the silicone, there were differing opinions including turning the thicker end to 3 o'clock position, which didn't make sense. One last question please, to confirm that the bevelled end is towards the tub and the flat end on the pipe. Am I correct? Thanks again."

Does this happen on any water level setting, or just on full load? If the machine is overfilling, the centrifugal force at the start of the spin cycle will throw the water up the sides high enough to overflow the top of the tub.

If the machine is overfilling just a little as I suggest, then the water level switch may be out of calibration or the water level hose may be partially clogged at the tub end. A quick fix in the latter case would be to disconnect the hose from the level switch and blow compressed air through it - it's a lot easier to get into the control panel than the side of the tub. A leaky hose would have a similar effect.

There are no instructions with the product. 1. Do I need Plumbers Putty to get a good seal on the sink drain hole? 2. There are 3 washers: 1 thick rubber washer; 1 thin rubber washer; and 1...

If you want to use the washers you place the thin rubber one on the top under the basket... then place the thick rubber one on the bottom first and then the paper washer...then turn tight...
If prefer either plumbers putty or clear silicone instead of the thin rubber one on the top...

How to replace the rubber washer of a bath tub overflow? The washer is beveled. Does the thick part goes on top or on the bottom?

The thick part goes to the bottom side of the opening. It is made that way to conform to the slope of the back of the tub to make it seal better.

Replacing the washer of the tub overflow

The thicker part goes towards the top because the back of the tub is wider at the top than it is at the bottom. The bevel keeps the chrome piece of the overflow straight up and down.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

I was washing pillows and water just overflowed - I'm not sure from where. I think the bottom of the machine. Just a little bit of water. Did I ruin the motor?

If you let the tub fill, then put the pillows in, you may have caused the water level to overflow the outer tub somewhat. If you didn't smell smoke or hear any frying sounds, the motor is probably ok. Does the washer seem to operating normally?

My water spinner burnt to the heater coil

it was the piece at the top of the tub wasnt it?it fell off and got hung under the element didnt it? mine did the same thing. well it burned a spot on the tub sears has that piece pretty cheap. I didnt worry but later the tub material cracked at that point where it burned and I put RTV silicone on it. the leak kept coming back. the washer has a lifetime warranty on the tub from cracking but if it is past its normal warranty period the labor will cost as much as a new dishwasher.
if it leaks if I had it to do over. I would drill holes at the ends of each crackline and then seal with RTV silicone. and maybe the cracks will stop.

Leaks occur in spin/empty cycle

I had the same problem, you need to turn the washing machine on it's side and look for a pin hole leak in the seam of the plastic holding drum on the bottom. I used a silicone sealant, "GOOP" , let it dry for 1 day and problem solved. It has not leaked in two years. good luck!

Water doesn't stop filling tub in washer, water overflows everywhere. washer doesn't wash on super/large loads and doesn't spin on any loads. washer is only 2 years old

water not stopping filling is the pressure switch its a long thin tube that goes from the bottom of drum to the front top about the thickness of a pencil this needs taking off clearing through and checking for pin holes then refitting this should solve water problem
