Modifying sleeves requires a bit of knowledge/practice because of the curves involved. You can check out some seamstress books at the local library that may be helpful or search for web sites that may help.

Simplicity 4059. do you need the tabs on armholes? How do side sew together, instructions don't say. Sandi

The tabs (usually referred to as notches in the instructions) on the sleeve armhole need to match up with the tabs on the bodice armhole. Make sure the wide tab matches with the wide tab and the narrow tab matches with the narrow tab otherwise you will end up with a sleeve facing the wrong way (toward the back instead of the front). There are also marks (beginning & ending) on the pattern of the sleeve armhole that show where to ease (or gather) the sleeve top into the armhole.

What is the standard arm length for patterns? I have shorter arms and don't know how much to shorten my pattern

measure your arm from back of shoulder with elbow bent to the wrist bone, of both arms cause some times people are different. then measure the same spot in the pattern down the back of the sleeve you can fold the pattern to represent your arm bent, see what the difference is. if it is not a major amount you can turn it up in hem or cut it off after you get the item done.
if you need to shorten the pattern take a small fold on the lengthen or shorten line to take up the difference in your measure to the arms. depending how fitted it is around the chest/bust area this will factor into the final fit.

I am having trouble understanding how to form the box pleats on simplicity pattern 4040 view D around the zipper. The directions are very vague.

You might try contacting the pattern manufacturer's support team.

Perhaps something here will help:

Simplicity pattern 1291 view F. Instructions vague, ready to start sewing it together. Several pieces were cut on fold no indication if I keep them whole, my fleece does not march up with the size.

If the pattern instructs you to place the pattern on the fold, the folded fabric should be kept whole (do NOT cut the fold!).

You can probably contact Simplicity with your questions.

Legthen sleeves on pattern simplicity 1945

usually the pattern is altered below the armpit area. Lengthening requires either tracing the piece and adding additional length by sliding the pattern piece the required amount. OR but cutting and adding in a piece of paper and retracing the cut lines.
