I had this same E2 error code come up when trying to wind a bobbin. The needle was movi g up and down, which it shouldnt do while winding. Saw another post that said to hold down the reverse button when you start to wind the bobbin. It worked for me!! I have a business and needed my machine to work!
Interesting... The machine had an E2 state fault yet allowed power to the main drive motor. So the reverse button active is an E2 fault override (allow power to main drive motor).
I expect the override is effected regardless the position of the winding spindle.
So pedal depressed AND reverse, should clear the fault so long as neither the clutch nor winding spindle remain stuck.

How to Fix Code E2 on Singer Fashion Mate Sewing Machine 7256 eHow
In case you are unable to view--here is the text:
The Singer 7256 Fashion Mate sewing machine has a top drop-in thread bobbin and an automatic needle threader. The digital display on the side of the machine is used to select different stitch settings on the machine. When the display reads error code E2, it means that there is a bobbing threading error, which may be caused by the thread looping or bunching under the fabric as you sew.
