Make sure belts are on pulleys right its easy for it to come off one of the pulleys

If it is a Craftsman riding mower, it has to have a drive belt unless it is shaft-driven. Its behaving precisely like a mower which has a drive belt that is so worn its "hanging by a thread - literally". That's why it won't pull a hill but is OK on level ground. You need to replace the drive belt, but you need to find it first. Consult your manual about what belt to use (you can get it at Sears) and the routing pattern.

Engine runs but tractor won't drive. Changed belt but seems too little tension on belt. What next?


Check your idler pulleys especially the plastic v--belt versions as they do wear out rapidly on some mowers. Once worn out just replacing the V-belt just don't do it.

Honda mower drive cable


The drive belt may be worn and slipping on the pulley. (assuming it is a belt driven model). This would cause the mower to lose a great deal of power to the wheels. By adjusting the cable only, you are effectively adding a little more friction to the belt/pulley interface which in turn will provide a bit more power but the belt may still be slipping on the pulley(s) which is where you could still be losing the majority of your mowers self propulsion. Some Honda models may also employ a belt tensioner that simply adds tension to the belt even if the belt becomes stretched out & worn but the pulley's can become glazed (slippery). If it is a direct "pulley to pulley" drive with a single drive belt (no tensioner) the worn belt can also glaze the pulleys and cause further slipping. You can reface your pulley(s) contact surfaces with a very light grade wet sand paper (1000 grit), a coarse grade steel wool or a scotchbrite abrasive pad, thereby giving the belt more "purchase" on the pulley(s) contact surfaces. If you do perform a refacing of the pulley(s), it is strongly advised that you replace the drive belt as well. Your mower will then function as it did when it was new. Hope this helps.

If the Engine is running fine and you are still not getting power to the hydrostatic drive, you probably have a loose belt or a pulley that is starting to seize up on it's shaft, by the sounds of it I would guess the latter, a squealing belt is caused by the coefficient drag of the belt against the pulleys it operates on. Check all the pulleys for free movement and make sure the routing of the drive belt is correct. Check the wear of the belt itself if it is cracked or burnt in spots this will cause slippage also.Good Luck.

Mower barely moves forward or backwards with or without the blades turning,engine runs fine but can't seem to get mower to move


Well you have a fault with the belt which goes from the engine to the transmission being too loose or the transmission itself has failed. Get underneath it and, with the engine cold and not running, grab hold of the belt and see if there is any slack in it. This would be the topmost belt, it should not have any slack in it unless the clutch pedal is pressed down. Don't try this with the engine running unless you have an extra set of fingers and a surgeon at hand. If the belt is good then your transmission has failed and you need another mower as the cost of the transmission will exceed the value of the mower. There are mower boneyards around and used trannys for sale on ebay, but most likely you will be looking for another mower.

Drive wheels dont seem to propel mower


SOME SELF PROPELLED MOWERS HAVE A SHEAR PIN IN THE DRIVE BOX THAT MAY HAVE SHEARED . IF THE MOWER GETS A LOT OF USE THIS PIN CAN SHEAR. ALSO SOME HAVE A FRICTION DISC, LIKE A CLUTCH THAT MAY BE SLIPPING. CHECK THESE TWO THINGS CAN'T TELL MUCH MORE WITHOUT A MAKE AND MODEL

Troy Bilt 33'' Replaced the self propel v belt and now the mower will not disengage from drive mode, also very hard to shift gears


If you didn't by the Troybilt belt, try that. I had the same problem with a Napa belt. Going into drive as soon as I grabbed the operator presence button, not coming out of gear etc. When I switched the the Troybilt belt, the problem went away.

BLADE DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT


Well, most riding mowers have a "pully idler", meaning once you have the belt on there (and it is the RIGHT size), the idler automatically gives the belt tension when you engage it (in fact, the idler pully is what IS engaged when you engage the belly mower).

Couple things to check (super simple):

The Belt. Look to see if she is wore smooth out.
Sometimes....they WILL stretch on you, instead of busting/coming apart, and give you noise (when she is engaged, but wore out enough to flop around a little)

The Deck Blade Bearings. Straight away, that is what it sounds like, or bent blades.

Check your Blade Bearings (super simple):
1. Pick up your deck to the highest high setting (mower off, just sitting).
2. Reach under, and grab your mower blade (do this for both sides), and TILT your blade UP (meaning, don't LIFT the blade straight up).
Seriously, jiggle it at a TILT. If you feel some slack in the bearing, the bearing IS shot. Straight up and down is most of the time OK, IF it is VERY little play on your blade bearings. As you do it, look at your belt pulley directly on top, if you see that pully bobbing....

However, if you grab one side of the blade only, then tilt the blade up, and she moves.....
Bearings need replaced, both the upper AND lower bearings PER blade.

They are not hard to replace, and not expensive either! (Though unfortunately, most are "sealed" junk nowadays!)

Bad Bearings show up (make themselves known) in only a few ways: Tons of Noise (grinding, squealing) & Vibration.

Go check them thar Bearings!

No power when drive is engaged


Hi
Check your drive belt and the tensioner pulley that holds tension on the drive belt. Its possible for the tensioner pulley to be sticking and not putting enough pressure on the drive belt causing it to slip.
Grab hold of that tensioner pully and make sure it moves in and out freely against the drive belt.
