Hello Jeffrey Genser,

Make & model would be really helpful...

But it matters not: I can SPECULATE with the best of them.

Specific to most microwave instructions is the CAUTION not to run the MICROWAVE with nothing (or very little) in it.

The magnetron (generator) will simply absorb it's own energy
and self destruct... If you have kids that like to warm individual pats of butter... Expect that unit will soon FAIL.

Likewise if you have kids (??) that think it's cute to
microwave DVDs or CDs... tin foil or any of the zillion stunts
un-developed minds are apt to engage... EXPECT the MAGNETRON to soon fail.

Sparks will be seen from the area of the magnetron.... before the FUSE finally OPERATES.

SUGGESTION ... If you MUST soften a single pat of butter
put a bowl or cup of water next to it and add a few seconds to the timer...

Your WALLET will be much happier.. and your microwave will still be there when you need it.

Hope this helps.

Put a hamburger in to heat, on a paper plate. The interior began to spark. the plate on the Right hand side appears to have a something black and charred (as if a piece of meat or grease has adhered to it)...

Usually the sparks are from exposed metal. Clean the oven, and the table and anything else you can inside. Then just try nuking a cup of water. That gives it something to work with and it won;t make any sparks itself. Then just see if the sparks are gone. If the paint has come off inside the cavity and exposed some metal you can get sparks but that usually means replacing the microwave. If its caused by an object or buildup then a good cleaning stops it.

Microwave sparks on the inside

It sounds like it needs professional servicing. There may be an issue with excessive radiation escaping from the oven -- this could be dangerous. Can't say for sure, but were it my oven, I would take it to a shop with the equipment to test for this condition.

Kenmore 1200 watt sparking when warming empty plates

Unless specifically stated in the manual, you shouldn't use the microwave for warming plates. That is not it's intended use.

I suspect the microwave circuit has failed in some manner.

Reply the specific Sears model number (in the form xxx.yyyyyyyy), and I can help further.

The Magnetron has failed, causing the waveguide to become damaged. If the waveguide is damaged/burned the microwave can not be repaired and should be replaced.

The cover is probably the magenetron. That is where the microwaves come from. If the bread was moist, it might have left condensate in the unit which is causing the sparking. Unplug the unit, leave the door open over night. If you can remove that cover, do so. Be sure to carefully replace it before using the unit. Never turn on a microwave with nothing in it.
