How do I reset my laptop to factory settings without losing any of my data and programs,,,,can somebody help me?

You can save your data like ms files, pictures, videos, etc (except the programs to a removable disc, usb flash drive, external hard drive and any other storing devices before doing the complete factory settings reset.

For the programs, you can just reinstall them by using the installation discs.

To reset password for your hp laptop you can try bootable HP System Recovery Disc to do factory reset without password. If you don't have system recovery disc then you can use Stellar Phoenix password recovery software to reset password. Once you are able to login with new password then you can easily factory reset your laptop.

Is there a way to reset a computer back factory settings without the recovery disc

Maybe it depends on if you did any backing up or made a disc image file or set up your restore to be active. This is why I try to let folks know to make a system image file backup entire disk to a separate drive. Save any important information to outside sources such as flash drives or external hard drives.
You can go and try to do a system restore from an earlier date. If you have a recovery backup disc you made you can use this as well or an image of your hard disc. All those can be used for restoring or fixing issues, since you have declared that you do not have a recovery disc.
I would purchase one as soon as possible for these occasions when this happens and it may again one day. So having the original factory disc is great to have handy that is for sure. This would be my recommendation right away. In fact to save you the hassle I think you ought to just do this before you attempt a recovery without a disc. Just a suggestion make it easy on yourself.
Not sure what operating system you have loaded or did have. So a guess would be Win 7 hopefully not Vista or XP unless it is an older model. So go online somehow and order that recovery disc for your laptop. In Windows & in the control panel there is an icon that says backup and restore. Tick that icon and if you can use your laptop at all. Go to and take a peak at it and see what you can do with it for the future.

How do i prevent a forgotten password on the administrative without a reset disk

Hi that_1red_bo,

I think you can create a reset disc using a USB flash drive incase you forget your password you can use that USB to reset your password for your machine with out having to reinstall windows all over again on the issue.

  • Turn your computer ON and log into Windows 7
  • Insert a USB flash drive into your computer any size would do fine, this will only take a small portion for the reset disc and can still be used for saving other files on the USB.
  • Click Start, Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety, User Accounts, Create a password reset disk.
this should create a USB reset Disc for you windows, and still let you use your Flash drive to save files that you will carry anywhere that you need access to.

I hope this will be Helpful to your quetion.

G5 imac.. with leopard can not get past sign in

If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it with the discs that came with your computer:

  1. Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
  2. Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
  3. Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.

Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.

: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
  4. Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
  5. Select the user name of your original administrator account.

Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

  6. Enter a new password.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click the red button in the upper left corner to quit the application.
  9. Choose Quit Mac OS X Installer... from the Mac OS X Installer menu.
  10. Click Restart.

I need to know how to download pictures from files on computor to a disk

Go to your pictures. Insert disc. highlight the file or individual picture in a file without clicking on them. On the left side where the menu and subs are will prompt you to save these to disc. Click it. When you are finished selecting all the photos you want saved go to your computer and click on your disc. It should prompt you by asking if you want to save to disc and click yes. Hope this helps.
