Info on these old dunnies is hard to find. A lot of Fixya patrons weren't born in 1984. This thread may be of help

The dual flush cistern does not empty when the buttons are depressed. They have to be held down to clear the toilet bowl. How can I fix this?

cisterns never completely empty as the setting of the mechanism to close the valve is activated when it gets heavier than the water supporting it
try allowing more water into the cistern on a fill by adjusting the water level control
get a plumber in to clean out the sewerage pipes as there appears to be an obstruction in the line

Twyford dual flush cistern

replace the whole control unit
There may be 2 problems
the small washer that shuts off the water flow when the level is reached may be swollen and not sealing properly
the section at the bottom has cracked at a thread level
so by replacing the unit you will eliminate both problems
to remove the unit, turn off the water tap, flush the system, holding the button down until all of the water has gone
remove the inlet pipe at the bottom of the cistern
undo the retaining nut under the cistern and lift the control unit out
there will be water in the bottom of the cistern so use old towels on the floor to soak up the water that will run out

the clear and the blue pipes control half and full flush. They should both be connected to the main cistern. The small button should give a half flush.

How do i fix a cistern that is continually leaking in to the toilet bowl? i have tried to open the cistern at the flush button unit but do not want to force open. tried twisting but is quite tight.

most modern toilets do not have an overflow pipe to outside instead they overflow into the bowl itself so have to adjust level so it does not overflow into return

Weak dual flush does not empty the toilet bowl.

well, yes... but apart from providing you with a forum in which to vent your frustration I'm not sure how you think we might help. I have the same problem with a dual flush cistern, but in my case I know that the root of the problem lies in the fact that the soil pipe leading from the bowl has insufficient fall (because the previous owner of my house moved the toilet further from the down pipe). Maybe something like this is contributing to your problem too?

Cannot remove top of cistern

There are some dual flush cisterns where you have to depress one button to reveal a cavity in the second button. Put a screwdriver in that cavity to lever out the second button, then release the first button and prise that out.

Underneath the buttons is a screw which must be unscrewed to release the cistern lid.

Not sure if this will apply to you... but if not, good luck anyway.

Slow Flushing mechanism

Check the angle stop at the wall ( valve) if it more then a few years old the rubber inside sticks try turning it off and on a few times. Well first just make sure its open all the way to start. If both of those do not work It might have a screen at the opening of the preeure mechanism...check that the was no line trash caught in it from turning the water on and off. If none of these things work let me know and we can get more technical in find out whats wrong...heck you could have just gotten a bad one. The Plumbing company I worked for when I lived in houston had the contract with them to do there warranty work and boy did we do a lot of it .
