It sounds like a lot of stuff for a diagnosis, is it an older projection TV? Don't believe it would be the bulb with the fact the sound is affected. May be time for an upgrade!

Do you have any ideas of what the issue is

  • Ron the Don Dec 06, 2016

you may have a bad motherboard? Its possible to try and "reflow" the motherboard however you can damage the TV if you have never done it before. Do you know the model number of the TV? I understand not wanting to get rid of it, but sadly TV repair can be just as expensive as buying a new one, in most cases even more expensive. Older TV's can be a pain to find parts for sometimes, but it depends on many factors such as brand, and how popular your particular television was in terms of sales. Try and find a model number and I will see what I can find online for you.

Yes its the convergence ICs. You will need ywo STK392-120 ICs and about six of the 6.8 ohm 1watt metal resistors to repair the issue. You can get replacement ICs and resistors at the following link and they will provide free instalation instructions with pictures so you can easially do the repair yourself and save about 400.00. Here is the link.

SOURCE: Phillips 54 inch rear projection,no picture.

One thing that comes to mind when you say high pitched sound is the HOT ( Horizontal Output Transistor). You may be able to find one at fry's electronics. They are pretty cheap. If you are handy and know something about electronics you may be able to replace it. I am not a TV tech, I have a background in electronics and like to play with them from time to time. Not sure this will help but good luck

SOURCE: Philips 60 inch rear projection screen is wacky!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

This is a classic switchmode power supply, shutting down to avoid a fire, explosion, or both. This set had developed a problem, that is so severe that the set must be shut down, This set should be removed from the Power, and in my professional recommendation, you should get a "Quote" for repair, from, an Akai, Approved Service Center, this point is very important for a good result, Always contact, their local, "Head Office" Now, when you get the information you want, then you can decide as to repair of replacement. The reason we want an approved agent, is that way, all the engineers are trained on their own brand sets, they have seen almost all faults, and will get the job done quicker, and for less cost, and usually have parts on hand,

Sounds like a short somewhere in there. I see old pre-HD big screen sets going for well under $200 on my local craigslist, so look there for a good replacement, because the repair will cost more.

Or fork over about $500 for a good used HD projection set.

The capacitors in the sweep supply and maybe in the main power supply are starting to dry up. Your going to need to get a tech to go over the boards and search out the dryed capacitors. It will take some time and maybe a bit costly. May want to think maybe about a new set? Good Luck
