If the printer has been correctly installed , after it has not been used for a while , it goes into a sleep (power saving) mode
when you wish to print a document, pressing the print button brings it out of sleep mode and turns on the printer
seconds later the details are transferred to the printer and it starts to print
there should be no need to turn off the printer button after printing a document

I am trying to set the printer to automatic duplexing...?

Hi

If you want to set Print on Both Sides (duplex) as the default setting for all print jobs (even single page jobs) use the following steps.
  1. Click Start , Printers or Printers and Faxes from the Microsoft Windows desktop.
  2. Right-click the HP Color LaserJet 2605dn_2605dtn and select Printing Preferences (Properties in Microsoft Windows 2000).
  3. Click the Finishing tab.
  4. Select Print on Both Sides under the Document Options section.
  5. Click OK to save the setting and close the Printing Preferences window.
  6. Close the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder.
Note:In this scenario, all print jobs, even single print jobs, will be treated as Print on Both Sizes (automatic duplexing) for media that is supported by the duplexing unit. For media that is not supported by the duplexing unit, the job will be treated as Print on Both Sides (Manually) (manual duplex).

Do i have to turn the printer on when i want to print or does it go on automaticly

If the power is off, you need to turn it on manually. If the power is on but the printer is idle, it will start printing automatically when the operating system sends a print job to it.

How do I tell the printer to take from the top tray?

Page 63 of your HP LaserJet 4600dn printer manual:

Controlling print jobs: (condensed version) MS Windows

Three settings affect how the printer driver tries to pull paper when you send a print job. The "Source," "Type," and "Size" settings appear in the Page Setup, Print, or Print Properties dialog boxes in most software programs.

Your question indicates that you wish to configure your printer to take from the top tray. That is a "Source" setting. So in the print Setup or Print Properties dialog box, change the "Source" to Tray 1.

Printing by Source means you choose a specific tray
from which you want the printer to pull paper. The printer tries to print from this tray, no matter what type or size is loaded in it. If you choose a tray that is configured from the embedded Web server for a type or size that does not match your print job, the
printer does not print automatically. Instead, it waits for you to load the tray you chose with the type or size of print media for your print job. If you load the tray, the printer begins printing. If you press the printer tries to print from another tray that has the correct type or size.

  2. Press the right or left arrow button to scroll until the report or list you want to print is displayed on the bottom line.

  • Sent Fax Repor: This report shows information of the faxes you recently sent.
  • Received Fax Report: This report shows information of the faxes you recently received.

When the Junk Fax Barrier feature is turned on, incoming faxes from those numbers will be blocked. This feature recognizes the last 6 digits of the fax number set as a remote fax machine’s ID.
  • Multi-Communication Report: This report is printed automatically after sending documents from more than one location.
  • Power Failure Report: This report is printed out automatically when power is restored after a power failure, if any data loss occurs due to the power failure.
