Question about Maytag Washing Machines

2 Answers

Maytag model DE312.Drum fills, spins a little and stops (w/wshr.empty). Smells like burning rubber. Motor blades and shaft spin. Both belts look good but drain belt feels loose. I was going to replace belts but am not sure if motor is dying or there may be a clutch problem.

    Lee,

Sorry about that, I grabbed the wrong booklet.

The model is LA312, series 02, serial 359285 RA.

It's about 20 years old but has been running fine until the last spin cycle.

    Thank, Dennis

    Lee,

The washer fills and agitates(with only water) but when the spin cycle comes, it tries to turn but can't quite get going and stops. I think the smell is the belt burning.

Now I think it may be the bearing(like you said).

Do you agree with that and is it worth repairing this old of a machine?

    Dennis

The smell of burn could be anything like a belt or a clutch(if it has one) or even an electric motor somewhere reaching it's end.Based on your location you should work out how much labour cost, work out cost of parts etc and assume that it might not fixed this problem as it may well be another problem with the controller unit(which is costly and difficult to find parts)..etc .Now work out the cost of a new washing machine etc..If you see not much of a difference then go for a new one as your's is already 20 yeras old...

Maytag did go bankrupt for a reason, and that was quality. There are a couple things that could be the culprit here. One being the tub bearing. The model number you gave me seems to reference a dryer not a washing machine. Are you sure you have the correct model number? Follow this link to see where to locate it,
http://www.maytag.com/support/model_number_popup.jsp
and please give me the full model number with the serial. Once I have that information I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

So it doesn't do anything right? When you start the machine for the wash cycle what happens? Does fill or agitate? Once I undertand your problem a little better we can isolate the culprits. Most likely its either the tub bearing. These machines are pretty straight forward. This site (click here) has the schematic break down, as well as sell all the parts. This site also sells the parts
    http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/S...
So upon dis-assembly and inspection you should be able to tell what else is damaged or in need of repair/replacement. You can also just replace the belts and go from there. You will know fairly soon whether or not its the belts that were the problem.
    Thanks again,
    Lee

I am sorry I could not respond sooner, and I had to inquire on a work around as the fixya system did not allow for me to respond once you rated our session. The added information does help. Its really a personal decision whether or not its worth it for you to fix it or not. It is considerablly less then a new one, and if you like fixing things and learning as you go. Then most likely you would want to try and repair it. Now on the other hand as you said it is an old unit so at some point its not worth sinking the money into it. Especially for what you can get a washer for these days. You could disassemble and check and clean clutch assembly. Sometimes the motor can wash the clothes but doesn't have the strength anymore to do the spin cycle do to it going bad due to old age. Those are your two options. I have given you all the places to locate parts so now all that can really be done is decide what you want to do. I hope you reconsider your rating as I don't get credit for being somewhat helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions or need further assistance.
    Thanks again,
    Lee

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

Usually due to blockage in filter or hose or pump, but may be motor brushes not spinning drum to proper speed

Heating extremely fast and smells like burning rubber

If it is a belt driven dryer the belt may be spinning on the motor shaft and it may be bad. Hence the burning rubber smell. Have it checked.

Smells like burning rubber when running

Vacuum belts lose elasticity and will slip. It may spin the brush roll ok when you look at it but be so loose that when. Vacuuming carpets the belt will stop turning. The motor shaft is still spinning and will melt the rubber belt causing a burned rubber smell. Belts on almost All vacuums need. To be changed at least twice per year.

Sounds like drum is locked and motor is running and burned the belt. Try to spin drum by hand, Might check drum ends felt seals, Teflon bearing strips located on the bottom lip of front drum end for wear causing drag. Also check 2 drum support wheels to see if they spin freely, take the belt off motor pulley and spin drum by hand, if easier & motor runs drum is dragging. How is the spring on tensioner, does tensioner pulley spin free? Hope this helps locate the problem.

My dryer flew off of a dolly when loading it on a trailer to move it. It smells like rubber is burning when I turn the dryer on. It was working fine until we moved the dryer. Could it be the belt is loose?

If the dryer fell some distance, the drum is probably out of alignment.

If the drum is not spinning at all, something has jammed the drum and the belt is being overheated by the motor pulley.

If the drum is spinning and there is a rubber smell, the drum has been knocked off of its rollers and/or glides.

In either case, the dryer needs to be opened. Click the link below:

There are two basic types of Maytag dryers, older models and the newer ones with the door that wraps over the top ('L' shaped door).

Washing machine spins slowly and smells of burning rubber

The belt could be worn and will be slipping on the pullys, as it spins up the rubber , rubs against the pullys and that is what creats the burning rubber smell, the belt needs replacing.

Maytag coin-op top load wont spin, motor runs, belt burns.

it not a belt, there is a $20 plastic and rubber coupling between the motor and the transmission that has broken.  It needs replacing.
