Depends on the make & model of your machine. If it's an older mechanical, it could have seized due to lack of oil.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

Http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing%20Machine%20Troubleshooting.htm .most of the time it is caused by a small piece of thread being caught in the hook area. Try this...grip your handwheel in your left hand and the small wheel in the center of the handwheel in your right hand and turn the handwheel sharply away from you. This will usually pop out the offending piece of thread and free your machine. Be sure to oil your machine well before you start to sew. Best of luck..

when mine sticks it's always the thread underneath the fabric that gets tangled. try taking out the bobbin and making sure no parts underneath are loose. i would google this and type in your sewing machine brand. there are more specific instructions this way.

It can do this if your bobbin is tangled. Check to see if any thread is caught. take the bobbin and the bobbin case out and clean it from threads and dust.

I had the same problem, eventually realized I never slid the bobin stopper back to original position (to the left) after filling up my bobin with new thread...

This is all i could find on the internet hope some of this helps you out.

Hand wheel moving needle moving but will not sew cannot release hand wheel to turn in opposite direction

Do NOT turn the handwheel the reverse direction.

If your machine is mechanical, most likely it hasn't been cleaned and oiled for a long time. Old sewing machine dries out and turns to glue which then prevents parts from moving like they should.

How to Oil Vintage Sewing Machine

Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube is very good because it has little teflon beads. It also does not dry out like sewing machine oil will. Then applying heated air from a handheld hairdryer will help loosen it.

Do NOT oil plastic/nylon, cams, or belts.

Why is the wheel on the right hand side of my machine very stiff when turning

the "hand wheel" on a sewing machine is meant to only advance the mechanism far enough to thread and set the needle , the motor should be used to run the machine else wise , as its turning every thing inside the machine to keep all the functions in "TimE" as models increase in there complexity there hand wheels are harder to move as more stuff needs to be kept in "time" now , also on some models the bobbin winder is directly powered by the hand wheel , if its not in use it should be disengaged completely

In sewing mode the motor turns but needle does not move. I have checked bobbin & upper thread - any help?

1. Try to turn the hand wheel. Does the needle move?
2. Make sure the center wheel on the hand crank is tight.
Try the hand wheel now. If you still don't have luck try this.
3. Loosen the center wheel on the hand wheel. There is a small screw on the center wheel on the front or side. Loosen it until it almost comes out.
4. Now tighten the center wheel. (clockwise) Does the needle move if you move the hand wheel? If it does you can tighten the small screw.
5. If this doesn't do the job you will have to take the cover to the motor off. The motor has a bolt to loosen. As you loosen the bolt you can move the motor until it tightens the belt and makes it aligned as well. Run the motor slowly with the foot pedal and adjust the motor until it operates at it's highest speed. Now tighten. Replace all covers.
6. The belt is sometimes in need of replacing but not usual. You will know when you take the panel off.

Why won't my old manual singer sewing machine needle move?

1. Disengage the bobbin winder. That is done by moving the arm away from the center wheel. 2. Tighten the hand wheel. When you tighten you should have resistance like a jar has. If this doesn't then continue. 3. Loosen the small screw attached to the hand wheel center lug. Now, move the hand wheel into a position where it will tighten. 4. Go ahead and tighten the small screw. Now, it should move.

Hand wheel not moving

sounds as though the hand wheel at the right end of the machine needs tightening by hand to engage inner workings. Hold the larger wheel with one hand tighten the smaller wheel.

The hand wheel just stays put while the inside of the machine seems to be moving, like something is slipping.

Move the bobbin winder to LEFT. Sounds to me like you didn't re-set after winding a bobbin.
Hope this helps!

Im trying to sell a Kenmore 117 - 959 but I can't get it to move. There is power to the work light, but Im stuck. Help!

If your gaskets are bad, the machine will not rotate. Can you move it by hand? If not then have you checked the gasket in the back of machine that comes in contact with the hand wheel? If it is making contact, this is what runs the machine and both the little black gasket and the hand wheel will spin when you rotate by hand. If the hand wheel is free spinning then it may need oiled. If you have a manual, try oiling the complete machine according to manual.
