1) Is the Screen resolution set correctly?

Native screen resolution should be set to 1024 x 600.

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop screen.
Go to the bottom of the list, and click on - Properties
The Display Properties window will come up.

Click on the Settings tab.
Down in the middle of the Display Properties window, you will see Screen resolution in blue.

There is a Slider. In WinXP it is an Arrow, with a Green tip on top, and bottom.
Left-click on the Slider, hold the left mouse button down.

Now move your mouse to the Left, to drag the Slider to Less screen Resolution, or to the Right to Increase.

Stop at 1024 x 600 pixels.

Also the Color quality should be set to Highest (32 bit)

Click on the blue down arrow to the right of the Color quality box.
In the list click on Highest (32 bit)

Go below to the Right, and click on Apply.
Now go below to the Left, and click on OK.

If that doesn't cure the problem, the problem is a hardware issue.
Problem will be;
1) Graphics chipset,
OR,
2) Video Cable,
OR,
3) LCD screen

[The Backlight used is LED backlighting. Uses a series of LED's.
Light Emitting Diode.
There is NO screen Inverter ]

If it is a hardware issue, I can guide you through the diagnostic flowchart, to see what the problem is, and step by step.

Dell inspiron 1100 bought used reinstalled xp and monitor had only 6 inch image adjusted resolution, it grew almost perfect one more adjustment now quickly shuts. down image Windows logo with start up...

You may have set the resolution/refresh higher than is possible for the laptop to produce, Try booting into safe mode (F8 on power up)
if you can, you can now reduce the resolution to the monitors default resolution.
If you have not already, pop over to the dell support site and download the right driver for your display

  • Hi, you need to make cahnges / adjusment to the "Resolution" on the Monitor. First, (right / alt ) click on an empty area of your "Desktop Screen," next click Personalize from the [short-cut menu], once the window open. Select the "Display Settings in the {Personalize appearance and sound} listings, from here you can adjust the resolution of the screen. You can adjust the "brightness" by doing the following: On the resolution scale adjust from Low>High; you can do this until you are satisfied with the view. In the (Colors) drop box, click the down [Arrow], and choose the "Highest" color (16bits>32bits...) Open the {Advanced} settings, click on the "List All Modes" button, once the window open choose the (Highest) settings, example: [1366 by 768, True Color (32bit), 60 Hertz]. "You can go back and repeat these steps until you are satisfied with the results. *Note: "Always, restart the Computer, after making any changes to the System." "I would really like to know how things worked out for you. Rating the solution is the best way, if you find the time. Thanks for using Fix' Ya"

When I use the external monitor S-video port on my Dell Inspiron 1721 running Windows 7 it only displays in black and white despite the internal monitor showing the screen in color.

Okay. For Windows Vista OS.

Go to Control Panel.

Under the Control Panel Home, select Additional Options at the bottom right of the list.

Click on Appearance and Personalization:

At the top right corner of the dialogue box, under Personalization, select "adjust screen resolution"

This will bring you to display settings:

Click the button that says "identify monitors" As each is displayed, it will present a number for which is the default or main monitor (1 or 2) 1 is the main monitor.

To change the external to the main or number one monitor: simply drag the #1 monitor to the left side (if not already there) If it is, you'll want to set the external as the default:

Do this:

While in Display settings, if the external is the #1 monitor, make sure to check the box for "extend the desktop to this monitor" and "this is my main monitor" for the external display. This should switch all settings to the external monitor.

Also, make sure the the resolution is correct for the size monitor you have. For a 20" (such as mine, external Dell monitor) the resolution is at the highest (1920 x 1080).

Also make sure it reads (to the right of that) "highest 32 bit). If this is not an options, make sure you're adjusting the external monitor and not the laptop screen. Otherwise you may need to upgrade your video card.

You should not need to do this though.

After you have set this, go to Advanced Settings and select Monitor. You will see at the top, a list of two monitors; your external with it's brand and name - and the laptop screen type and name. Select the external monitor name: Click on properties, drivers and Update Driver, then select to Automatically search online for driver.

Please let me know if you need further assitance.

I am trying to connect my HP Photo printer to my dell inspiron but I get a message that the resolution needs to be changed. I try to change it but cant get it be a permanent change. Any ideas?

Had this with another Dell myself. If you are using the highest resolution select the next setting down.

Try changing the resolution 3 times between reboots, you may find the resolution change eventulaly 'sticks'.

Inspriron 1100

laptops are very specific about what you can replace parts with.
Take it back to where you bought it and ask to exchange for a 14 "
If you want to see a bigger picture on that laptop the only way is to plug in an external monitor; in the back there should be a plug for an external monitor. Plug this in to any computer monitor. You will have to adjust the resolution.
