Replace the drive belt

Do you mean replacing the cutter head drive belt?

With power off start the ribbed belt on the motor pulley, insert allen wrench into cutter head shaft. slowly rotate cutter head while feeding belt onto cutter head pulley. While rotating head, alternate between pulleys feeding it on one rib at a time. Softening the belt in hot water is NOT necessary to install the belt in this fashion.

Planer problems

If you're looking at the planer from the infeed side, there's a belt guard on the right side of the head. Remove it and check the condition of the drive belt. If it's broke the motor will spin without powering the cutterhead and feed rollers. The drive belt is still available as part number 22-563 on sites like and Just put your model number in their search box and find the drive belt in the breakdown.

I am trying to replace a belt on a Ryobi 10 inch surface planer, but I haven't found a tension release. How do I replace the belt

I thought one of those belts, pulleys, had a screw on the end holding a washer. Pull the screw off and the washer, and the belt should slip off. It has been a while since I have had to go in there, but I remember that much. Unless it was a hand held planer I had. I would have to go and peek at it. Check it out.

Planes Comparison

If you have a stack of hand planers and you do a lot of woodworking, you might want to buy a power planer. Power planer have a number of qualities that should convince you to keep the old hand planers but add that power to the group. Choose a power planer when you have a lot of planing to do. One thing about a power planer is that it is much faster compared to the hand planer. Use a power planer when you need to make rabbets or even scrolling. The power planer can do both of these jobs. There is a great deal of versatility about a power planer. Keep the cut smooth with a power planer. Frequently a hand planer needs to be lifted and started again. This leaves gouges and groves. A power planer has a continuous blade that leaves a smoother cut. Get more precision. The continuous motion of the hand held power planer and set depth cuts the specific amount that you want. Plane larger areas. You can plane doors quickly and easily with a few strokes of the power planer. Straighten a board easier with a power planer. You also can create chamfered surfaces with the power planer.
