Question about Whirlpool Heating & Cooling

Open Question

I have a whirlpool model ACM102xLO that seems to be dying. I cleaned the coils, and the unit seems to operate normally for a few minutes. Fan motor works, compressor motor seems to work. When I checked the amp pull on the fan motor, it falls in the normal range of 1.2A. When the compressor kicks on, the amp pull jumps to around 10 and climbs to a high of 15 or so, then the compressor shuts off and the amps jump to about 25 or 26, before cutting off completely. The amps then drop to the fan motor level of 1.2. The compressor is extremely hot to the touch. Is my a/c unit dying or is there a reason the amps jump so high before the compressor completely shuts off for that cycle??

Frigidaire AC window unit, model fam185r2a (18,500 BTU) only cools for a few minutes before it cycles off and just fan blows. Then a few min later cool air cycles back on. Is this a thermostat issue?

The window units normally have a sensor thats attached to the front of the indoor coil. This controls the thermostat. I usually pull this sensor away from the coil because it stops cooling before the room is cool. It is attached to the cold coil so it senses the coil temp, not the room temp. You can normally see it when you remove the air filter. Don't break it! It may be a wire or small copper tube

Compressor comes on for about 1 minute, but fan doesn't. Then a sound like a pressure release valve opening starts and will continue until you turn the unit off. The unit will sometimes work normally...

The sound is from the compressor high side pressure exceeding design limits due to the fan not operating, the fan pulls air across the coil to remove heat from the freon which keeps the pressure down. The capacitor or fan motor may be bad. Need to open unit panel and visually inspect the capacitor for swelling, (rounded top should be flat) where the wires connect. Also use meter to test mfd of capacitor. May only need capacitor replacement, most common failure on this unit.
If not corrected damage can be done to the compressor due to overheating.

Knocking noise coming from bottom of refrigerator

check the compressor for operation adn check the fan in the back of unit to make sure it is running...whirlpool units are notorious for compressor relay failure normally they click in and out every few minutes... if it is a knocking noise and continuous make sure compressor is not trying to start and sitting there shaking... normally it will stop after a few minutes and then start again....

Beverage Air. Model: CFG24-1. The evaporator fan motor does not turn while unit is operating. The entire condensing unit is working, except the evaporator fan motor. When I removed the evaporator fan motor...

The fan has a limit control wired in series that shuts the fan down until the coil temperature reaches 25*F. this prevents the fan from blowing warm around after defrost.
There is also a switch which is placed for the door to close. Either one may be defective.
Worst case is the freezer is not pulling down temperature wise.

Fridge runs all the time

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Since you did not provide a model number... this will be a generic / not unit specific answer.

Running all of the time can be caused by several things. Two of the most common reasons is either the condensor fan area in the lower back of the unit has a problem. (lint, fan not running) or the evaporator fan in the freezer is not running. (Fan, ice build up on coils stopping fan)

If the unit is not defrosting properly the evaporator coils freeze up and air can not pass through the coil area. This results in the freezer beening cold and the fresh food compartment to slowly warm up.

Open the doors of your unit and touch the facing area where the door gasket seals. I should be warm to the touch but should NOT be very warm to almost hot. If it is very warm / hot to the touch it will confirm my comments above.

UNPLUG the unit
Clean the condensor area in the bottom of the unit. Use a crevice tool and something NOT sharp, NOT metal and NOT pointed to clean the coils. Old paint brush, big cable tie etc. Make sure the condensor fan is running after you plug the unit back in. A note on powering up any refrigerator.... anytime power is remove you must wait 15 - 20 minutes for the coolant system to stabilze or the compressor will not start.

If you note ice build up in the freezer compartment do a manual defrost by unplugging the unit, placing a fan directed at the freezer compartment (less freezer contents) for just over 2 hours. It makes a water mess so be ready to tend to drips and puddles. After 2 hours and clean up.. return the unit to normal service.

After doing the above the unit should operate normally for at least 2 days. If it continues to operate normally great. If after a few days it starts acting up again suspect that the automatic defrosting function is not working properly and have the defrost system checked.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,,

My refrigerator and frezzer are not cooling. i cleaned the coils. the condensor pot is vary hot is this normale? i unpluged it for about a half hour while i cleaned all the dust out. and pluged it back in...

If the condensor coils and compressor motor seem too hot, make sure that the compressor fan is turning. This is what removes heat from the coils by pulling room air across the coils.

The fan is usually at the back of the refrigerator down low. If it's not turning, you will need to replace the fan motor.

Motor running a lot

9360gabbs,  The significant thing that you list is... it is louder than usual.  You indicate that you have cleaned the coils under refrigerator.  Try and roll the refrigerator out from its normal location so you can get behind it.  Remove the cardboard or metal cover across the bottom area of the refrigerator.  Check and see that the fan next to the compressor is running and that the blades are clean from dust, etc. Sometimes the condenser fan dies and must be replaced sometimes the blades are covered in dust, etc and causes a decreased volume of air to be moved by the fan.  Make sure the entire area is clean from dust, etc.  Be sure to replace the rear cover that was removed.  Very important!  Hopes this helps you! I have a u line fridge/icemaker undercabinet model that does not seem to be cooling- it had not been turned on for for quite some time but a few weeks ago we turned it on and it seemed to cool but we...

If compressor is running then unit has a sealed system issue- throw it away unless still under wty. If comp not running then probably bad relay on it. Only way to check is to replace relay. Please contact me if you need further help or leave feedback if appropriate as that is how I get paid. Thanks for letting me help you!

Hot refrigerator

you need to check the condenser fan motor located in back of the refrig behind cardboard cover. most likely the motor is bad or something is obstructing the fan from turning. also be sure the coil under the unit is clean as well. temporarily you can place a house fan blowing in the rear of the unit to keep it operating normally until you get it repaired.. peyton
