Hello Denise Zier,
In our area...
the local gas (PG&E) company had a subsidized program
the make the CONVERSION ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE
It is POSSIBLE... but without any subsidy...
I'd seriously check out the prices of a complete new heater... and weigh the benefits against the cost...
((not to mention newer heaters are JUST MORE
The conversion involves changing out the entire gas valve, adding a compatible control (logic) board, thermocouple, pilot head and most likely a hot surface igniter (likely a new transformer too).
All done by a CERTIFIED INSTALLER
I'm sure the "NEW" conversions are more reliable than the old "NEW" conversions... I didn't want to become knowledgeable about the... but I did... and before COMPLETELY replacing the
heater.. went back the OLD PILOT
... just to get warm.
I'm just saying... Now we have the heat-pump
pretty in-efficient... but with SOLAR PANELS
who really cares (aah warmth at last).
