SOURCE: Kenmore Gas Dryer Gets Hot, Shuts Off Early in Cycle

Sounds like a faulty high limit or cycling thermostat. The thermostat tells the dryer to heat until the interior of the dryer reaches a certain temp. It should be mounted on the exhause duct inside the back of the dryer. It should look something like the one in the picture:

Hope this helped and best wishes.

To remove the shroud/panel 4 screws are removed and lifted up and pulled forward. Disconnect the wire to the humidity sensor.
Remove the belt from idler and yank the drum out. (The belt goes under the tensioner then over the pulley then release it and the spring holds everythang in place like a DOT dryer.) The grooved/ribbed surface goes to the tub side.

Dryer runs for about 5 minutes then shuts off the clothes are hot

Your vent may be obstructed causing the dryer to trip, once it cools down it will reset itself. The way to see if thats the problem is to disconnect the vent and run the machine, if it doesn't shut off, you will need to clear the vent.

The dryer will not shut off automatically. It would run forever if I let it. It also takes a very long time to dry the clothes. As if it's not heating them properly.

Hi there,

Well first of all you may try running the dryer with the vent hose removed. A slow vent will cause what you're describing. Then you'll need to look at the cycling thermostat. That is the part that tells the timer to advance. It sends a signal to the timer when the proper temp is achieved in the drum. Means when the element cycles off the timer motor moves a little bit. When it cools down and the element comes back on the timer stops. This action takes place when you're using one of the auto cycles.
If you have a slow vent it can cause the high limit thermostat to do the cycling. Please let us know for further help or information.....

Good Luck!!

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Gas dryer turns off when load is nit dry

You may want to clean out the dryer's insides as well as your venting that leads outside. This may be the reason your dryer isn't fully drying. It basically isn't running efficiently enough due to age or lint build up or both. As far as the running after it's cooled down it may be a "wrinkle guard" where it tumbles the clothes until they have cooled down.

You can let the vacuum run alittle longer so the bag fills up with air, also make sure that the bag in on correctly and you have the right bag for the unit. Let me know if this helps.

Dryer will start to dry clothes then shut off

sounds like the over-temperature thermostat is the source of problem. This device prevents over heating by removing power to heating coil when normal thermostat control has failed. Perhaps your model takes it a step farther and removes all power to machine for safety. But this device is "tripping" too early unless you can find that your normal thermostat has failed. One test for this condition is to remove power to heating coil (ONLY) and retry a cycle. If your symptom disappears, then the over-temperature thermostat is faulty. If no change, there is either a faulty controller circuit or an intermittent short that is rising temperature-sensitive.
