Replacing starter rope on 6.5 hp briggs and stratton mower

I have an old Scotts 2 in 1 mulch side discgharge power propelled mower with a 6.5 hp Intake Edge OHV briggs and staratton engine. The starter rope broke.

I took the plastic cover off the top and then there was a metal piece over where the rope should go. There are 3 or 4 bolts that have a round place, not a phillips or flat head screw. How do you get those off or what do I need to do next to replace the starter rope?

Could you give me step by step instructions on how to replace the starter rope. I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks.

SOURCE: Starting issues. Can't pull cord.

Make sure your flywheel brake is not engaged or the cover is hindering the mechanism somehow after it is installed

SOURCE: 5 hp briggs and stratton mower is hard starting

Most times the briggs engines start hard when hot because the exhaust valve is leaking at the seat.If you hear a hissing noise from the muffler when you are trying to start instead of a good crisp pop it that is a good indication the valve is burnt. To be sure you would have to have a compression or leak down test done on engine.A valve job is not an easy job if you don't have the right tools.

There is a flywheel brake that is contolled by the safety bar of the handle. If the cable to the safety bar has broken or is no longer attached the the flywheel brake will be on. Not only that there is an ignition Kill switch as part of the flywheel brake. If the brake is on, the kill switch is activated.

Your mower needs some simple maintenence
1. Recoil assembly repaired or replaced.
2, Throttle cable and control repaired or replaced (Item 10 below link)
3. User Safety Bar cable adjustment or replacement. (Item 11 below link)

The above items are not a good reason to call your mower a parts source.

Without a model number I had to GUESS which model this was.
This is my best guess:

Need to replace starter cord on Tecumseh LV195EA engine for walk behind lawn mower

This is an easy one. You need a #2 phillips screwdriver, a 1/4" nutdriver or socket, a 5/16" nutdriver or socket, 84" of #4.5 braided nylon rope, scissors and a lighter or flame of some kind.

1. With the #2 phillips screwdriver, remove the 2 screws that hold the green plastic cover to the top of the engine. This is just a decorative cover.
2. With the 5/16 nutdriver, remove the 3 screws in the top of the fuel tank. Lift the tank straight up about 3/4" and then just lay it back on the rear of the mower deck.
3. The round black object on top of the motor is the starter houseing. You will find it being held on with 2 screws from the side. The 1/4 nutdriver should fit these. Remove them, and note the position of each screw and the position of the starter top. It might help to put some colored tape on the starter top and on the upper engine shroud to make sure you put it back in the same position. The starter top will come off by lifting it straight up.
4. Remove what is left of the old rope.
5. carefully wind the inner pulley (the same direction the rope will pull it) until it is tight. Then let it rotate back a little until the rope hole in the pulley lines up with the rope hole in the starter top. Use your screwdriver to hold these in place by putting it through the pulley and starter top vent holes.
6. Measure your rope out to 84inches and then cut it. Take the lighter and melt the ends of the rope to keep them from ravelling. When you melt the ends, take a paper towel or a rag and wipe the ends to form a point. This will make reinstall easier.
7. Push the rope throught the eyelet of the starter top and through the hole in the pulley and tie a figure 8 knot on the inside of the pulley. Tie the starter handle on the other end. but do not tighten this knot, you may have to untie it to lace it back through to where it goes.
8.. Hold tension on the rope and remove the screwdriver. The rope should retract into the starter top.
9.Reinstall everything in reverse order.

Good luck!

My Briggs & Stratton 500 Series with model 10T502, Type 0495 B1, and Code 07011 855 failed to start after I cleaned it because the rope/string had no tension on it. What do I need to do to get it...

Does the starter rope rewind? If So and You removed the engine shroud you have to be sure the Pull Starter lines up with the flywheel nut. If the rope does not rewind the return spring is broken so you have to get a spring and remove the shroud and install it. I would take the shroud off and with me to get the spring and the place may install it for you. Bolt the shroud back on and you should be in business.

The start pull cord has no tension on it, I can't find a reset control, is there an easy way of fixing this?

You need to remove the starter cover and rewind the rope a bit.

It is actually not too hard to do. And you dont need any parts!
