Question about Epson Stylus RX500 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Epson RX 500 - froze when printing

The page was mangled but I removed as 1 page. The error light remains steady but no change when I touch any button on the screen or clear/reset. The screen tells me I need to contact service.

I have unplugged it and restarted as well.
I called Epson, he said it could be a gear or sensor problem and that I have to send it to get fixed- no one is close to me. I would rather give it a go if possible before sending it.

Any ideas? Thanks!

How to unlock your Epson RX500 printer

If your RX-500 printer has stopped printing and can't be reset, you will usually see either a steady red light or alternating red and green lights and the printer will not respond. There may also be a message in your computer status monitor saying "communication error" / "printer requires maintenance".
This is caused by built in software / firmware which counts the amount of prints you've made and stops when the protection counter reaches a predetermined limit, also giving the message that your ink pad is full. You will be allowed a certain amount of overflow prints to the protection topbutton1.gif counter limit, after which the printer will completely stop.

There is software online that will normally reset most Epson printers that have reached this limit and is used by Epson Service Engineers called SSC Service Utility (sscserve.exe), however this does not reset the Epson RX-500 protection counter / firmware.

All is not lost, you can manually reset the firmware using the following sequence of actions:
Close down all Epson programs
Exit all Epson printer programs that may be running in the background or on your task bar.
The quickest way to do this is to press Ctrl, Alt & Del on your keyboard and release, which will open your Windows Task Manager.
Click on [Processes] and a list of all processes running on your computer will appear, look for any in the list that say Epson, highlight it and select [End Process]. Carry this out for any Epson programs running.

Now to reset your printer.
Switch off the printer using the power button.
PRESS and HOLD all following printer buttons: Power, Load/Eject, Stop, B&W, Color and continue to hold until "Init eeprom" appears on the printer screen, then RELEASE ALL BUTTONS.
Next press the Color button to clear the protection counter.
Follow any other instructions given by the printer.

When I try to change black cartridge in Epson NX100 the carriage will NOT STOP - flips back and forth. How do I get it to stop so I can remove the cartridge - Black is only one out.


1. Turn on your Epson Stylus NX100 Series printer. Your printer should be plugged in and connected to your computer.

2. Lift open the scanner and prop it up with the support bar. Press the stop button on your printer. The print head will move along the printer and will stop to allow you to change cartridges.

3. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge that needs to be replaced and remove the cartridge by lifting it straight up. Dispose of the used cartridge immediately.

4. Shake your new cartridge several times before removing it from the package. Remove the cartridge from the package without touching the green chip. Take the yellow tape off the bottom of the cartridge. Insert the cartridge into the holder by pressing until you hear it lock into place.

5. Release the support on the scanner and put the scanner back into its original position. Press the stop button to let your printer know that you have changed the cartridge. It may take up to two minutes for your printer to be ready to use. When the "On" light stops flashing and remains on, you may begin to use your printer
NOTE: Beware that you must have all ink cartridges full because Epson uses color even when only printing black and white (lots of comments here about that scam!!)

Replacing Ink Cartridges Make sure you have a new ink cartridge before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones. Caution: Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability. Note: Leave the expended cartridge installed until you have obtained a replacement, or the ink remaining in the print head nozzles may dry out. 1. Turn on your printer. 2. If an ink cartridge is expended, the error and ink lights on the control panel stay on. 3. Open the document cover, then open the ink cover. Caution: Do not remove the ink cartridge guard or you may damage the printer.24 Maintaining Your Printer 4. Press the y Stop button. If a cartridge is low or expended, the print head moves that cartridge to the replacement position to indicate that it should be replaced. The P Power light starts flashing. If two or more ink cartridges are expended, the expended cartridge at the far left moves to the replacement position. The P Power light starts flashing. If no cartridges are low or expended, the print head does not move. Note: Do not hold the y Stop button for more than three seconds, or the printer may start cleaning the print head. 5. Warning: If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Then remove the cartridge from the package. Caution: Do not touch the green chip on the front of the cartridge. This can damage the ink cartridge. 7. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the ink cartridge. Caution: Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink may leak. 8. Insert the new ink cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 9. Press the y Stop button. If another cartridge is low or expended, it moves to the replacement position. Repeat steps 5 through 8 to replace any other cartridges that need to be replaced. When you press the y Stop button and no other cartridges need to be replaced, the print head moves to its home position and the printer starts priming the ink. This takes about 1 1/2 minutes.26 Maintaining Your Printer When the P Power light stops flashing and the error and ink lights go out, ink charging is finished. 10. Close the ink cover, then close the document cover. Caution: Never turn off the your Epson printer while ink is charging or you'll waste ink. If the error and ink lights remain on after the print head moves into its home position, an ink cartridge may not be installed properly. Press the y Stop button again, and then press the ink cartridge down securely. Note: If you replaced a cartridge while copying a document or photo, cancel printing and make sure your original is still placed correctly on the document table. Then copy your original again. If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge, you cannot reinstall and use the cartridge.

Follow these steps:

Troubleshooting steps

1.
Verify that the formatter light is blinking or steady. If the formatter is blinking, it is functioning properly and probably does not need to be replaced. If the formatter light is not blinking, proceed to Step 2.
2.
Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
3.
Remove the HP Jetdirect card, third-party device, hard disk, parallel cable, or IFR cable from the formatter if one is installed.
4.
If the error continues with accessories removed from the formatter, perform a cold reset on the printer. Ensure the HP Jetdirect card is not in the printer during a cold reset or the card settings will be changed back to default settings. To perform a cold reset, do the following:
1.
Turn on the printer.
2.
Watch the control panel.
3.
When the memory starts counting, press and hold the green (Select ) button.
4.
Continue holding the green check button until the Ready, Data, and Attention lights flash once, and then stay on steady.
5.
Release the check button when the Ready, Data, and Attention light are on steady.
The control panel will display SELECT LANGUAGE .
6.
Press (Down Arrow ) button once. The control panel will display COLD RESET
7.
Press (Select ). The printer will perform a cold reset and then continue its power-on sequence.

If the printer comes up to ready, print a Configuration page. If a 49 error occurs from printing internal pages, continue on to the next step.

Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.
7.
Remove the eight screws around the formatter.
8.
Remove the formatter. See Figure 1.
9.
Reseat the firmware and memory modules on the formatter. Check for any DIMMs that are non-HP and remove them. Non-HP DIMMs are not supported by HP and may cause this error. Replace with HP DIMMs, if necessary.
10.
Reseat the daughter (interconnect) board. The daughter board is connected to the formatter behind EIO slot #1. To release the daughter board, push in the black retaining tab underneath the formatter then lift up the one side of the daughter board.
11.
Reseat the daughter board.

12.
Install the formatter.
13.
Turn the printer on again.
14.
If it comes up to READY , print a configuration page. If a 49 error does not appear from printing internal pages, or at power up, continue to the next step.

Install the HP Jetdirect card and hard disk before installing the formatter. Verify that each device is properly seated.
16
Test any EIO devices, by turning off the printer, installing each device separately, and printing a Configuration page. Repeat for each EIO device.
17
If the 49 error occurs with any EIO device installed, replace that EIO device.

The following is from the Epson Users Manual:
Troubleshooting
No lights on the control panel
Check the power supply cable connections and the power outlet.
ERROR LED on (not flashing) with no printing
If PAPER OUT is on, the roll paper is not installed or is near the end.
If PAPER OUT is off, the printer cover is not closed properly.
ERROR LED flashing with no printing (and no paper jam)
Printing stops if the head overheats and resumes automatically when it cools.
If overheating is not the cause, turn the printer off, and after 10 seconds, back on.
Removing Jammed Paper
CAUTION:
Do not touch the thermal head because it can be very hot after printing.
1. Turn the printer off and press the cover open button.
2. Remove jammed paper, reinstall the roll, and close the cover.
3. If paper is caught in the cutter and you cannot open the printer cover, open
the cutter cover as shown in illustration J.
4. Turn the knob until you see a triangle in the opening. This returns the cutter
blade to the normal position. There is a label near the cutter to assist you. See
illustration K.
5. Close the cutter cover.
6. Open the printer cover and remove the jammed paper.
Cleaning the Thermal Head
CAUTION:
After printing, the thermal head can be very hot. Be careful not to touch it and
to let it cool before you clean it. Do not damage the thermal head by touching
it with your fingers or any hard object.
Turn off the printer, open the printer cover, and clean the thermal elements of the
thermal head with a cotton swab moistened with an alcohol solvent (ethanol, or
IPA).
Epson recommends cleaning the thermal head periodically (generally every
3 months) to maintain receipt print quality.

It sounds like your print head is overheating. Clean as instructed above.

One page jammed after switching off when 1 page printed. Orange light on


Hi ,


First off all u switched off the printer and on switch off mode press the green button and on pressing the button switch on the printer hold that button for 5 seconds and then release the button whenever u realese the button the printer start migrating . After migrating if the printer have same problem then u reinstall the printer driver and again reinstall the driver, after reinstalling the driver the printer will working fine .

Red light on steady


If the ink light is on steady red, that means the black or color ink cartridge is nearly empty. Obtain a replacement black or color ink cartridge. To know which cartridge is out of ink, check the ink levels using EPSON Status Monitor 3 (Windows) or EPSON Status Monitor (Macintosh). If you just replaced the cartridges before you got the error light, that means that the replacement cartridge is not recognized by your printer. Please reseat cartridges. Then turn the printer on and off. The cartridges maybe bad also.
If the paper light is on steady red, try to reload 10-20 sheets of regular paper into your printer. When printing on CD/DVD, CD/DVD tray is not inserted in the printer. Insert the CD/DVD tray in the printer and press the paper button.Could also be that the printer has loaded more than one sheet of paper at a time. Load paper in the sheet feeder, and then press the paper button to resume printing. If the CD/DVD guide is open, close the CD/DVD guide, load paper and then press the paper button.

Printer has red lights permanently on when powered up


if they were initially flashing fast there is a fatal error and a repair is needed, but always try a re install first. Go to printers and faxes folder and go to your Epson C88 printer icon, right click on it and select cancel all documents or prints, then select uninstall, to remove the printer. Uninstall driver from add/remove programmes, turn off and remove printer from usb port and restart pc. Install the drivers and software again from the cdrom and when prompted to connect printer, switch it on but connect to a different usb port if possible and allow windows to detect and install. If the lights are still steady red or flashing fast, then the printer is faulty.
