Question about Microsoft Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings for Windows

Aoe 2 screen/colors get weird

Hi,
I have a problem with the colors of the screen of age of empires 2. When I first installed aoe2 the screen looked fine, even when I set the screen resolution at 1024 x 768. However, after a few days the colors all of a sudden went weird (grass became more reddish, water purple). At first this was only the case when i had the screen resolution at 1024 x 768, but now it is this way almost all the time, even with smaller resolutions. Sometimes when I start a game the first few minutes the screen looks normal, but then it always gets weird again. I only experience this 'color problem' with aom2 and I'm using windows vista.
I hope someone is able to help.
Thank you in advance!
Emma

Hi Emma, its a problem with the Aero Glass feature of Windows, I also have the same problem on Windows 7. To solve it I've found if you run the following in a batch file it works.

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
age2_x1.exe
Start explorer.exe

Open Notepad and paste the above into it, change the age2_x1.exe to empires2.exe if you only have age of kings. and save as "ColorFix.bat" or what ever .bat << important. This simply closes Windows Explorer while the game runs removing the glass and starting when it exits. I've found disabling the themes under compatability does not fix it.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

My AOE 2 Conquerors will not start (Windows 7)

Got the same problem on my wife's laptop. The best thing that worked is a hard reboot - when game halts, you just reboot (reset), and then after clean loading of Windows you start only the game, and it works. It worked most of times (like 9 of 10, in the rest of cases it took another reboot), but that's obviously a nightmare :) Apparently I got rid of the problem but still unsure what helped. Here are the tips I used:

  1. Video drivers update/downgrade. Check the manufacturer's site of your videocard and look for the different driver versions. Either you should update it, or get an OLDER one, if your current is the latest.
  2. Compatibility mode. Right click on the shortcut, go to Properties and then Compatibility. Try WinXP SP3 or something under, and be sure to check "Use 256 colors", "Disable visual themes", "Disable desktop composition" and "Run as administrator" boxes.
  3. DirectDrawFix. http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=11108 - the button for download is right above the first post (found it myself not from the first glance :). Download, run, find the game .exe file (it's like age2_x1.exe usually), and that's it. Actually fixes color palette issue with AoE2, but I guess it helped with black screen halt for the same reason with Direct Draw.

I can not play AoE2 on my personal profile.

Hello,

At some point during the installation or after it would have asked if only you
(administrator) can play it or anyone.. You should select everyone.

Post back if you have any more questions or comments. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

Installation for Age of Empires 2 stalls.

I almost shot my self trying to install this. I had the exact same problem. What worked for me is go to the cd and explore. Right click on setup icon and got to the compatibility tab. set to windows xp, click on "run in 256", also "run in 640x480" click on run as administrator. Apply. Then try to run the install. This worked for me perfect.

Age of empires 2 for mac doesnt work on my user

I bought my white mac book exactly a year ago... so its still pretty new I guess.... heres what you do
1. install "age of empires 2 1.0.6 update" from this link:
http://www.destineerstudios.com/support/aoe2.html

2. right when starting the game, hold the command or the apple button and a option screen pops up.  It will now allow you to select "force 256 colors" due to new update.  Check that box and press play.  some forums say you also need to select "don't play intro movies" or select don't change resolution or something like that but I did not have to do that.  So I can also watch intro movies... yay.   All I did was select "force 256 colors".  Hope that helps.  It took me an hour searching online to find the solution.
That should fix the problem.
Some forums say that I have to  change resolution 640 x 480 as well but I did not have to say that either.

When i install age of empires, it installs to 100% and freezes.

Explore the disc, and on AOESETUP.exe, set the compatibility to Windows 95. It should install fully. Now, if only I could get my computer to stop with the BSOD when I exit the game..
