Question about Computers & Internet

I was told i needed My Mother Board serial number to get assistance. I was told to press The keys FN+F2 to find the number since the box it came in was thrown out. I wasn't told to press those keys at Startup. just when the computer was up and running. I had to e-mail back to find out that I press these keys during STARTUP. When I do this i don't get the screen that was described to me. I get at the top- Information-Main-Advanced-Security-Boot-Exit, Nothing that shows System Information,Mother board icon, for System serial number. By the way, I purchased the laptop at Circuit City over a year ago via mail order. The Numbers I found at Information were: HDD Model name: WDCWD 1600BEVS-22-RST-(PM) HDD SERIAL NO. :WD-WXE507C16598 ATAPI MODEL NAME: HL-DT-STDVDRAHG5A-(SM) ATAPI SERIAL NUMBER:KV174BA5940 SERIAL NUMBER:LXAXYOX101723097411601 IDE OWDC WDI600BEVS-22-RSTO-(S1 PRODUCT ID-89578-OEM-7332157-00211 I HOPE ONE OF THE ABOVE NUMBERS IS WHAT YOU need. What is a f2

The F keys are a series of "funcition keys", typically labeled F1, F2, to F12. They are typically above the number keys. Some keyboards may simply have an Fn key. With such keyboards, Fn held down while pressing 2 would provide you the essence of an F2 key press. Just what F2 does on your computer may be specific to the brand or if pressed while a Microsoft program is on screen, perform a specific function within that program.

Combinations of keys may be pressed, such as ALT + CTRL + F2 in a Word document to perform some task.

The key may have a special function already assigned to it by the operating system or it may have a value assigned by a program in use.

Do the following with nothing attached other then the AC Power. After trying these fixes and neither works, it is a mother board issue. Replace the mother board.

1. Enter System Setup (aka BIOS) reset it to its default settings. By doing the following:

I am unable to activate wireless card. I have to press Fn f2 key but the f2 key on my keboard doesn't work. I tried connecting a wireless keyboard (it doesn't have Fn key), then pressed Fn on laptop, F2...

It could be a drivers problem... Unistall the drivers from the device manager and install a fresh one from the dell website.. Try pressing the FN+F2.. Still no go.. Try to check whether the keyboard is working.. Still no go - resaet the Wireless card... Still no go.. Replace the wireless card..

Hi, my laptop the latitude d410 won't let me use the Fn F2 button to turn on my wireless... Any ideas??

Maybe the drivers for the special keys are not installed. Try simply pressing the F2 key instead of Fn+F2. If it does the trick, then you have multimedia keys first option selected in BIOS which means you need to use Fn to Press function keys.

Otherwise its a driver problem.

Presario v2000

Try this; Press Fn+F1 instead of F1 alone or Fn+\F2 not only F2. Most laptops are by default Fn key activated so we always need to press it with the key combination.
If this doesn't help, there must be internal faulty/problem. Boot up the system and keep pressing F8 and go into "Advanced Boot options", if it's working, then there's no hardware, must be the Fn key.
Good luck

Thanks for using FixYa.

fn+f2 means your pressing two keys at once
the function key (fn - usually a different color - maybe blue - than the letter keys) and the f2 key

hold down the fn first then the f2 - look for the fn on the lower right or left next to Ctrl keys

Enable wireless card and key number pad

To turn wireless on (or off) press the Fn and F2 keys together.
