If you are meaning the DC24, like your post seems to be tied to, the manual can be found here:

I bet I have the same problem as you. My vacuums canister was put back together backwards and now will not move far enough to click unlocked. I am not sure how to fix this and I cant find anyone on any forums who do :( If you figure it out post it! So far ime just trying to muscle it open.

This model has the filter beneath the tools/attachments.
Open the hatch to gain access to the tools. Release latch/tab at the front of the tool holder, and lift. Remove and replace filter. This should be done every 6 bags.

The plastic dirt holder should have a lever that opens the canister.Should come right out with a slight pull.empty contents into the trash.

I couldn't figure that out either...since I misplaced the owner's manual...Anyway, there is a little gray colored knob at the top of the "collection" canister...and simply press that button and it disassembles that canister from the rest of the upright and then you are able to empty that trash contained therein.

Lift the catch where the canister lid joins the handle, then pull the whole assembly away from the handle.  Take the assembly to wherever you want to empty it, then press the button at the bottom front of the canister.  The bottom swings down and the muck falls out.  In the ideal world, you will then take the lid off by twisting it slightly anti-clockwise (you'll see the "lock" and "open" markings on the canister rim), remove the pleated filter (again by twisting anti-clockwise), give it a good shake and then brush between the pleats.  Reverse this process to put it back together, and away you go again!

From the bottom of your machine going upwards past the handle that is on the canister portion of this vacuum, you will see that the top of that canister had a depression where you should be able to put your fingers in, and gently pull that lid back, opening the vacuum bag compartment. According to the manual, simply pull that back, exposing the bag. To remove the bag, pull the cardboard plate on the top of the bag, out towards the no open face. Throw away your old bag, and take your new bag, fold down the paper sides of the bag, then slide the new bag into the track completely. Close your lid, and you are done.
While you have this compartment open, it's a good idea to check your filter that sits below the paper bag.
