I have a 2000 Lincoln Continental 4.6L V8 with 105,000 miles. When starting the engine there is a loud squealing noise coming from the center pulley on the engine. (crank shaft Pulley?) How hard is this to change?

  • gch811 Jul 20, 2009

I know for sure that the noise is comming from the center pulley on the engine (do not know what it is called?). When I spray some oil down behind the pulley with the engine running the noise stops temporarly. Also, the noise goes away after 10 - 15 minutes with the engine warm, but squeals under acceleration.

It may be a idler pulley bearing starting to freeze up remove the belt and turn all pulleys, power steering pump, alternator, idler pulley , etc. to find out if there is excessive resistance offered if so this is the culprit, on the idler pulley check the raidial play in the bearing by trying to move it by holding it with your hand and try to wiggle it gently back and forth same with the other (pulleys) check for loosness or play in pulleys bearings if everything checks out ok the battery may be running low and upon startup the alternator is under alot of strain to compensate for the recent drain on the battery while it is stressed to turn the starter to start car, your car may be drawing power from the battery as the car sits causing this condition disconect the pos. terminal of the battery and run a positive voltmeter wire to battery terminal then run negative volt meter wire to the now removed positive battery terminal cable set the voltmeter to dc there should not be 12 volts present if so there is and open circuit present drawing down the battery as the car sits while off.

Good luck

Tps on nissan quest makes loud noise when accelerates

As I look at your letter, which is very good, I might add, here are the few things that occurred to me.
The "loud squealing" should be a belt.
You have one or several belts, and if they get loose, or are worn out ( that includes the belt rubber getting old and hard) they will squeal like that.
However, the squealing also may be coming from one of the pulleys the drive belt or belts are attempting to turn.
If you have a bad bearing in one of the pulleys, you can get that loud sound like " a train".
If you are really careful, a "mechanic's stethoscope" might help you.
That is to take a really long screwdriver, and put the tip on each of the pumps or base of each pulley, and the handle end to your ear, and you can hear the bad bearing "scream" with the engine running.
Be blessed.

2000 montero sport: There's a loud squealing noise coming from the engine. What could be wrong?

Squealing is most common with loose or worn belts, I would start by replacing the drive belt on the front of the motor and go from there, Its easier to troubleshoot a squealing motor if you know that the belt or belts are good.

Noise coming from the belt

You mean squealing from the drive belt on the motor? Normally this means the belt is slipping on the pulleys, and needs tensioning.
Apparently on your car this is done by a spring tensioner, which probably need replacing

Had belt squeal, treated w/belt dressing now loud clicking

Stop!
One of your pulleys is seizing. Most likely the a/c compressor or the tensioner (idler pulley).

Use a helper.... turn OFF a/c and have someone start the car. Observe the pulleys and see if the center one quits turning or is the source of the noise.
If can't determine and no noise, turn ON A/C and observe.
You will find it, but stay out of the line-of-fire if the belt breaks... it will be slingshot out of the engine compartment!!

Check the idler pulley. Does the noise happen when the A/C is on?

No this is not the end of the car,if its the very bottom pulley in the center,it's the crankshaft pulley, and no the motor should'nt have to be removed to replace the pulley.

Loud rubber - rubbing noise when steering

first you may want to check that all your wheels are properly aligned.
if they are then your tires need to be changed because of the wear and tear
if you don't want to change all four tires you can change the two front ones and have the ones which were up front installed at the rear
but it is preferable to change all four

Loud squealing sound in my engine

Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.

check and see if the belt is still on the engine. It is possible you may have broken a pulley
