Gets busy signal

When someone tries to fax us they get a busy signal and the fax won't go through. I have to unplug the power from the fax machine and plug it back in then the fax will come through. Is the fax broken or is there a quick fix?

Re: gets busy signal

You may simply have a bad phone line from the machine to the wall jack. If the connection is getting flakey it will cause it not to connect.
You could have a sticking relay on the fax modem circuit board.
Also you could just need to reset the machine via the manufacturers directions on how to clear the memory or reset the machine to defaults.
Another question is , do you have any other pieces of equipment on the phone line with the fax? Such as a credit card machine or other device that may be causing the problem. If you have more than one item on the phone line, try plugging only the fax machine into that line and see if that works.
Is there an extension phone built into the machine also? Make sure its not causing a problem either.
That problem has a multitude of issues.
You could also have a phone line problem. If your line voltage is low, line current low or you have alot of DB loss, it can cause that issue.
Sorry I can't narrow it down to one specific issue, but that one has lots of possibilities.

Can not get a dial tone. Phone appears to be off the hook. How do I trouble shoot it?

Unplug the phone line from the fax machine. Wait at least 1 minute then call the phone number that goes to the fax machine from another line such as a cell phone. Make sure you get a ring and not a busy signal. If you get a ring then hang up the phone. Plug in the fax machine again and call the fax number again. If you get a busy signal then either your phone if off the hook, the switch that is actuated when the phone is placed in the cradle is bad or your modem in the fax machine itself has gone bad. Another thing to try is unplug the fax machines power cord for 30 seconds then plug it back in. I have seen the modems get "locked up" and keep the phone line open. Unplugging will sometimes reset this and get it working again.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

When I dial a fax number I get a busy signal even though I know that the number is not busy because I have dialed it on my outside line and it works. This has happened repeatedly. I have unplugged...

Since you mentioned that you have an outside line, do you have to use a code to dial out normally? Try plugging in a phone to the line for your fax machine, and attempt to dial the number for the other fax machine using the phone. You should reach the fax and hear a high pitched sequence of tones. This is the other fax machine trying to establish a connection. If you still get a busy signal, try calling the owner and letting them know that their fax machine is not accepting incoming calls.

When trying to fax, iam getting a fast busy signal, this problem just strated

This could be related to the fax machine, but more than likely it's a phone line issue. Try sending a fax manually by using the fax machine's speaker or "on-hook", then manually dial the number. Listen carefully as the machine dials and make sure it's even dialing out. Do not hit start until you hear the other fax machine pick up. If the "fast" busy signal occurs before dialing is complete or right after, have your phone line checked.

check the hand set is correctly seated on its cradle.
Check the Hook button on the front of the machine.
Disconnect the fax machine from both the phone and power lines for several minutes, reconnect and try again.

I have included a copy of the users manual in case you are missing yours.
