Question about Magic Chef CTB1722 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

CTB1722GRW compressor clicking on for 20 to 30 seconds then off.

We had electrical outage and the power flashed a couple times the day before. Now unit is getting cool but not cold. The relay in the back "clicks" and the compressor sounds like it runs for 20 to 30 seconds then the relay clicks off. Both the condensor and freezer fan run constantly. The units cycles about once every minute. Is it the relay or the compressor system?

It depends on how severe the power spike on the outage was,if your lucky it may just be the contactor,if not comp time, you can open the contactor case and manually start the compressor, use an insulated non-metallic device to do so

Refrigarator not working after power outage

When power goes on and off suddenly, it can cause the compressor to overload and "trip out" This is supposed to protect the compressor from being electrically damaged. In most cases, after 10 or 15 minutes, the compressor will reset. It is usually safer to switch off the fridge or unplug it for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure a full reset. If it doesn't start, the power surge may have damaged the compressor relay. or overload device on the side of the compressor. I would doubt that it damaged the compressor itself. Be aware of the relay and overload device, unfortunately, there are Techs who will quote for a compressor job when all it needs is a relay or overload.

Hi Nick,
I would plug in a new start relay. The start relay is on the side of the compressor.
If the new relay still will not start the compressor then the compressor has been damage from the power outage.

Even after unplugginf for a day to reset the unit won't cool afte we had a power outage

Try plugging the unit back in, pay close attention after a few seconds, for click near the compressor. If you here this sound then chances are that the relay on the compressor has shorted out. This is an easy and inexpensive repair. If you don't here the click then it may be a control board

Clicking noise after power outage

If you had a clicking noise about once a minute for 3 to 5 times, then unit worked fine, you have no problem, it was just letting the pressure equalize in the system before the compressor could restart. (this happens if you had a very short power outage).
If you are getting many clicks and compressor is not starting, you will have to replace the motherboard.

Power won't stay on although there is electricity. If i reset, the power light comes on, but only for 2 seconds- the fridge is now 60 degrees. We lost power yesterday afternoon- could this have fried it?

After a power outage and possible power surge it is very probable serious damage was done. Worst case senario being a grounded compressor. I know of nothing you can do yourself. Time for a service call.

Compressor cycling at 1 hz

Check and confirm that your power supply is good. Also try plugging into a different outlet. Your compressor is cutting out on thermal overload due to high amperage draw which is caused by either low voltage supplied or an internal breakdown of the insulation on the windings. If you have confirmed that your power supply is good and this still happens, you will have to replace the compressor.
