Question about IBM Thinkpad T40 Thinkpad T41 Thinkpad T42 Motherboard - 27R1978

Hard Drive Sooo... This is what I posted earlier: Help me!!! My laptop starts up and I can hear it, but there is only ablack screen. I tried hooking it up to another monitor to see if thescreen was dead, but nothing showed on it either. Could it be my videocard and how can I tell if it is? This is the solution I got (from chrisbock): IF you hooked another monitor to your laptop did you transfer thescreen to the other monitor if so and you got nothing i would say thatyou had a video card problem. it may be time to get a new laptop itwill cost you about 1/2 the cost of a new one to fix it. Thank you for your help. :D ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So yes, I had already tried transferring the screen onto the other monitor and my brother had already told me that if that didn't work, it was probably the video card. I just wanted an EXPERT opinion before throwing the laptop away. BUT.... How do I get all the **** off my hard drive...I so desperately need it! p.s. my brother's being a d!ck and won't help me and I'm a girl (as if you couldn't tell...LOL!) so that is why I'm here instead of asking him. Thanx.

Try to check the memory of your laptop... memory is the one first that is affected when screen is not displaying... try to place another memory on your laptop... if you have a screw driver for laptop, get it and open the back of the laptop casing..

note: be careful in opening it. because it might damage your casing...

Compaq presario V5000 laptop blank screen

Does the hard drive light blink like there is activity? It sounds like your laptop is not posting. Unfortunately on a laptop if it fails to post it is likely the motherboard..

I would verify first that you Cannot get the external monitor to work by using the function + Keys on your keyboard to enable the secondary display (Usually something like FN+F4) FN being the key on the lower left of your keyboard between ctrl and alt typically..

If you cannot get it to display, Try an ESD Discharge.. Basically unplug the power brick from the laptop, Remove the battery and try turning it on.. While trying to turn it on contact your fingers on the metal prongs that protrude from the where the battery was on the laptop. This will discharge any built up static electricity from the laptop. Try hooking it all back up and booting.. Good luck

Cannot start my start laptop its as soon as I put the password blue screen appears crash dump cannot start

Would be nice to know error code on the blue screen. That is pointing on the problem-and solution.Anyway, you can try system restore. On boot, computer shows start-up options, and among them is "System Restore".Hit that button and try to restore OS in earlier point of time.Or try Safe mode.Run-msconfig-enter-system restore. To be honest, from my bad experience, blue screen on boot is almost always connected to dying hard drive. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I own a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop. Whenever I try to shut it down or restart it, it kind of locks up on a black screen with the mouse frozen in place. I left it like that all night and it was still on...

This does sound like the program you have installed has messed things up with the system files of the computer.

You can use system restore to take the computer back to an earlier time before you installed the program.

Click on the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tool and then click on the System Restore icon. A window will pop up and from there you can set your computer back to an earlier date, just follow the instructions and click yes to agree that you understand that system restore cannot be stopped once started. When you have agreed to this system restore will start and then after a minute or two your computer will restart.
If system restore was successful it will tell you once the computer has booted into Windows.

As for an external hard drive i would recommend Western Digital external hard drives. They are very quiet and reliable but there are plenty to choose from so from there its up to you what you purchase.

If you are having any trouble getting to system restore or need anymore help please post back making sure you post what operating system you are using (XP, Vista or Win 7)

Good luck.

The computer turns on and has the thinkpad start up but while that's starting up it sounds like my hard drive is making a clicking noise. is it supposed to do that? Also, after that screen it beeps and...

It sounds as though you have a faulty hard drive. The system recognizes that your hard drive has a problem, and is unable to correct it. Unforunately, there is a very, very low chance that you will be able to get any data off of the drive.

Contact Lenovo; if you are still under warranty, they will walk you through steps in order to determine if your hard drive truely is defective. They will also be able to replace your hard drive and reinstall the operating system at no charge.

If you are not under warranty, you will have to take your laptop to a local computer repair shop, or use a service such as Geek Squad, and have them replace your disk (for a price).

Dell laptop w/ Vista - will post but then freeze up

Do you see the hard drive listed in the BIOS?
If not, probably a hard drive issue - but strange you can't boot from a CD.
Did you reset the BIOS to defaults? If it is a BIOS issue, you could try and flash it to a newer one (if it exists) but if it goes wrong you could brick your computer.

I had a failing hard drive in a laptop which would not boot up. I bought one of those converter things (laptop IDE to full IDE) so I could hook it up to my desktop pc as a slave. I was able to access all the data and transfer it to the new hard drive in the laptop. If you have a SATA connection on the laptop hard drive and your other computer then I don't think an adapter would be needed.

Problem loading Windows XP

You need to start windows in the safe mode, press F8 at boot up.
Remove al the drivers that you've installed on you previous computer system, usualy this is is a conflict between wrong drivers and your hardware.
If you can't remove the old drivers, reinstall Windows XP, do a clean install
by booting your computer up with the Windows xp cdrom, from the Windows XP cdrom you're also able to repartionate your hard drive.
First remove the old partition(s) en make a new one, the setup does then format your harddrive, after that you're ready to install windows xp on the new partition.
