I have tried all of what you suggested. I guess the camera has developed a defect. I just wanted to eliminate all possibilities before sending it off for repair.

It helped me decide to send it in for repair as it must be faulty as all suggestions did not correct the problem.

Unfortunately due to fixya's answering system, I cannot see what previous experts have suggested. Have you tried turning off the image stabilizer? Also are you using the Digital zoom when your taking these pictures as that effects it as well. Try setting basically all of the settings to manual. This camera overdoes the ASA to solve low light problems. when the rating is over a 100 then is when you see so much noise in the JPG's. I would first test, change, and test again all the settings. Then we can go from there. Now there is the chance that the camera is defective.
If you go to this link you can fill out a repair form to start the process. Also you can call them between these hours and inquire about an estimate and service options. -(800) 622-6372, M-F, 8:30am to 7:00pm ET
If you need any further assistance or have any other questions please let me know before going onto another expert.
Thank you,

Turn off the image stabilizer...The image stabilization system used in your camera does not use the best approach to overcoming camera shake - rather than the more expensive sensor based systems it downgrades the picture quality and in dark (relatively) situations the result is grain in the picture. See the bottom of Page #25 in the advanced manual (found on the CD which came with your camera). A similar problem occurs if you turn on and use the Digital Zoom available in the camera. Unless absolutely vital for a particular shot turn both of them off

Why are pictures grainy, Photos are usually very crisp. This time every one was grainy like low res when I have it set on High. The camera is a Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Some people report that with an ISO setting of 200 or higher, there is graininess in the pictures, so check your ISO setting. I don't own one of these cameras, but there is a lot of discussion on the net about them. The following amazon discussion about the problem deals with a fellow who upgraded to the S3 from the S1. One problem was the ISO setting got bumped up, but another problem was the ISO was increased in the Sports Mode. See if any of this applies to your situations:

Grainy picture quality Olympus FE-230

check to see if your image stabilization is on (shaky hand). turn this feature off. also check the properties of your image to see if the iso is set to automatic. high iso, such as 800, will cause this in cameras

How to overcome Grainy photos on some in door shots with my Canon A710

The reason for this is that the auto scene function chooses which ISO (light sensitivity) is needed to have a fast enough shutter speed to capture a still image (instead of a ghosted image). There is no way to change this. You can switch modes to P and specify the ISO you want to use (100-200 will give you a clear, non-grainy image, 400+ will be grainy). To capture a still image in low light with a low ISO, you need to use a tripod. Hope this helps.
